Job description
Structural Steel Quality Control Inspector (2nd Shift): Inspects fabricated structural steel to ensure conformance to shop drawings and specifications by assisting the Quality Control Manager, and performing the following duties under little supervision.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
· Reads shop drawings (blueprints) to obtain assembly information such as specified material, finish, and dimensions to perform inspections of fabricated steel.
· Measures dimensions such as length, height, and distance, between reference points to ensure product meets specifications. Documents reported inside Tekla PowerFab software or on the tablet or desktop computer.
· Performs visual welding inspections primarily on Flux Core welding, and document welded assemblies inside Tekla PowerFab.
· Report findings to the Shift Supervisor and, if necessary, write non-conformance reports if parts are not in conformance.
· Prints out barcodes for the tagging of completed parts.
Required Skills:
· Strong Ability to read and interpret documents such as structural steel shop drawings, weld symbols, and procedure manuals.
· Ability to use a computer or tablet to log routine reports and correspondence with supervisors who manage other departments.
· Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as feet & inches, fractions, angles, and degrees.
· Ability to apply concepts of introductory algebra and geometry for problem-solving.
· Ability to communicate well with others outside of the quality department such as fitters, welders, painters, and shift managers.
· Ability to interpret multiple instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
· A background in the fabrication of structural steel or welding of structural steel is a necessity.
Experience & Education:
· High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or five years related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Minimum 3 years of experience in structural steel fabrication with welding experience.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use their hands to handle measurement tools; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk throughout the shop and occasionally sit at the computer during report writing. The employee is required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to inspect all visual angles of the fabricated assembly. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
This position is primarily performed in the fabrication shop around machinery, welding, grinding, hammering, and spraying. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Expected hours: 40 to 45 per week
Typical Shift Hours: 2nd shift 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm
