Position Summary
A Program Instructor at the Gary Comer Youth Center delivers high quality out of school time programs to the members of GCYC. Instructors deliver engaging, creative, and innovative instruction that inspires exploration, grants exposure and fosters development. With guidance from their supervisor, the Program Instructor executes daily programming, specialty programs (e.g. field trips, school holidays, camps, special events, etc.), and advances in their program area in support of our mission, vision, and values.
GCYC is looking for a dynamic, energetic youth development professional to serve in the essential role of Sports & Leadership Instructor. The Sports & Leadership Instructor plans and delivers engaging programming, activities and events for middle school and high school members in the area of sports and fitness through a lens of leadership and social-emotional learning. The ideal candidate has a background in athletics, health, and SEL/mentoring. The Sports & Leadership Instructor is a catalyst and ambassador for health and wellness initiatives at GCYC and creates unique opportunities for the Comer community to learn more about the importance of adopting a healthy and active lifestyle.
GCYC programs run during afterschool hours, Monday to Thursday 3pm-8pm, and Fridays 12-8pm, including specialty camps and workshops during school holidays. All instructors are expected to engage in the management and supervision of youth outside of their scheduled program sessions as well, including café supervision during meal times, rotating through late pick up supervision, and field trip supervision.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Program Operations:
- Executes the program delivery for GCYC community, including curriculum development and procurement and collaboration between departments and program areas and with campus partners
- Executes sports and fitness programming including skill development in a variety of sports, including alternative Olympic sports
- Recruits and retains youth to programs in their program area to ensure 100% enrollment and 80% average daily attendance
- Ensure program delivery is equitable for all members – considering all age groups, genders, races, abilities and sexual orientations feel welcomed, supported, represented, and have access to all programs and services
- Contribute to the organization and implementation of special activities/events and out of school time camps (e.g. winter break)
- Keep abreast of current best practices, research, and trends in youth development and education to contribute to the development of staff and advancement of organizational practices, including learning new sports and skills to introduce to members
- Responsible for managing and executing deliverables and compliance for grants assigned
- Plans and implements programming in accordance with overall organizational goals, methods and objectives (e.g. Quality Program Outline, Daily Program Plan, etc.). Utilizing and creating evidence-based and researched curriculum, lesson plans, and educational materials
- Maintains sports equipment inventory
- Manages classroom through positive youth development practices
- Ensures the timely and accurate entry of data into internal data systems (e.g. Salesforce)
- Responsible for special projects assigned by direct supervisor, the Center Director or Executive Director.

Physical Work Requirements & Environment:
The GCYC environment is consistently bustling with youth and community members. The Center’s work is fast paced and varied. Our work is done on site where our youth and families are. Therefore, it is required that team members meet the following requirements:
- Have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Able to complete administrative work in a shared office space within a youth center.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree preferred.
- Collegiate athletic experience a plus
- 1-3 years experience in roles working in youth development, employment/workforce training, or education of youth and young adults especially with individuals facing barriers to economic stability.
- Experience leading multiple programs in a nonprofit environment strongly preferred.
- A proven commitment to delivering quality enrichment programs through documented work experience in program planning and execution.
