REPORTS TO: Building Principal
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: The library media specialist fosters a creative, flexible and positive environment to ensure the library is an essential part of the learning community within the school. The library media specialist will be an advocate for student learning and will encourage the development of a lifelong love of reading and knowledge acquisition. The library media specialist is responsible for collaborating with teachers and staff to disburse relevant information while also leading digital literacy instruction to students. Additionally, the library media specialist will assist teachers with technology integration and the use of appropriate instructional mediums to enhance student learning. The ideal candidate will demonstrate competency in selection, acquisition, circulation, and maintenance of materials, technology, and equipment that support the district curriculum and student learning. This position also serves as the main liaison in their respective building to the district one-to-world learning initiative.
REQUIRED PERFORMANCE AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates relevant, engaging, and personalized learning experiences for each student
- Ensures the library is the learning commons and hub of learning of the school by fostering creativity, exploration and discovery
- Establishes and maintains effective relationships with students, staff and community
- Learns and implements strategies to instruct students in higher and more challenging levels of learning
- Collaborates and works effectively with classroom teachers and other educators on a consistent basis
- Promotes equitable access to resources in a variety of formats and services for a variety of needs for both students and staff
- Advocates for dynamic school library programs and positive learning environments by collaborating and connecting with others
- Integrates technology consistently to enhance student learning opportunities
- Serves as the building liaison (collecting, storing, maintaining, servicing, repairing and tracking student devices) for the one-to-world learning initiative
- Continually upgrades personal technological skills to enhance student and teacher learning
- Integrates technology tools to communicate and facilitate both student and staff learning
- Promotes digital citizenship instruction to support appropriate academic use of information
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere
- Works well as a team member to serve all constituencies
- Promotes the development of reading skills and reading appreciation
- Joins with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning
- Develops the library media center programs and procedures
- Orders media center materials needed for student circulation and curricular resources
- Promotes the library media center and its programs within the school, the district, and the community.
- Oversees library budget expenditures and keeping records of disbursements
- Teaches information and communication literacy skills
- Prepares state and district reports of materials and equipment as needed and requested
- Coordinates and works with other school libraries both in and out of the district
- Develops circulation procedures/schedules for student and teacher needs
- Develops and maintains resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and instructional strategies
- Adheres to and follows all deadlines and requirements as presented by administration/state/federal law
- Attends all meetings as requested by building and district administration
- Maintains strict confidentiality as required by law
- Develops a professional development plan annually and commits to lifelong learning and growth
- Adheres to and follows all adopted Board of Education policies
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 181 day teacher contract. Salary for this position is actual placement on the teacher’s salary schedule or special placement on the salary schedule as approved by the Board of Education. Length of contract established and approved by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education policy using the Performance Based Teacher Evaluation. Summative evaluation forms will be forwarded to the Superintendent of Schools to be kept on record.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND VISUAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. Additionally, the employee may occasionally be required to push or lift up to 25 lbs. as necessary for the safety and well-being of others. Lastly, this job requires the employee to have the vision ability to read handwritten or typed materials, and meet multiple demands from several people while interacting with other staff and the public.
