What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Health Specialist position at Gaston County Government?

Preferred Qualifications:
Current authorization in food and lodging, pools and tattoos, childcares, and schools and 3 years of experience as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in food and lodging and/or current registration as an Environmental Health Specialist by the North Carolina Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners.

- Conduct inspections of various types of food establishments, lodging facilities, institutions, long term care facilities, and residential care facilities to ensure compliance with NC State laws and administrative rules.
- Inspect childcare centers and schools to ensure compliance with NC State laws and administrative rules.
- Permit and inspect public swimming pools and tattoo artists to ensure compliance with NC State laws and administrative rules.
- Responsibilities consist of sanitation inspections of food, lodging, child day care, tattoo, public swimming pool, and institutional facilities in the county; perform office duties involving telephone correspondence with public, complete necessary reports, permits, and correspondences; conduct workshops to educate food-handlers, managers, students, etc., on environmental health issues; and attend continuing education meetings and conferences to stay updated on methods and to maintain Registered Environmental Health Specialist certification.
- Graduation with a Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC); OR
- Graduation with a Bachelor's or postgraduate degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours in the physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences; OR
- Graduation with a Bachelor's or postgraduate degree in public health and has one or more years in the of experience in the field of environmental health practice.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current authorization in food and lodging, pools and tattoos, childcares, and schools and 3 years of experience as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in food and lodging and/or current registration as an Environmental Health Specialist by the North Carolina Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners.
- If not a NC Registered Environmental Health Specialist, training and authorizations can be provided if educational requirements are met.
