What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax GIS Specialist I/II position at Gaston County Government?
The Gaston County Tax Administration Purpose Statement: To accurately and impartially appraise all property in accordance with applicable state laws and to collect all ad valorem taxes. We strive to be effective, efficient, and courteous to all customers and citizens of Gaston County.The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform:
Level II:

The applicant selected must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
- Identify the location and make appropriate changes to the parcels of the Gaston County tax map using recorded deeds, plats, and other legal documents and ESRI ArcGIS software to reconfigure tax parcels by splitting, combining, or modifying/correcting parcel boundaries.
- Complete updates to the tax map to correspond with the most current annexation maps, legal orders/judgments, local municipality ordinances, and project maps from the NCDOT.
- Trace title of real property in the public record to correct discrepancies in the tax listing.
- Identify the different types of land ownership and types of interest in land and establish a chain of title of the property for tax purposes.
- Research estate files of deceased property owners.
- Produces maps utilizing GIS software and other documents needed for the public or staff upon request.
- Assists the public with Tax Mapping AND any other Gaston County Government questions.
- Contact attorneys, surveyors, and property owners to discuss issues/questions/errors made apparent in the process of tax mapping.
- Other duties as assigned
- Graduation from High School or GED equivalency and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in GIS, computer-aided drafting, mapping, land records, or related field; OR
- Associates Degree with at least 1 year of experience in GIS, computer-aided drafting, mapping, land records, or related field; OR
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Cartography, Geographic Information Systems, Surveying, Computer Science or related field; OR
- Possess a State of North Carolina Property Mapper Certification or willing to obtain within 2 years of hire.
- Candidates with an understanding and knowledge of the North Carolina Machinery Act and Land Record processes are highly preferred.
Level II:
- Graduation from High School or GED equivalency with 5 years of experience in GIS, computer-aided drafting, mapping, land records, or related field; OR
- Associates Degree with 3 years of experience in GIS, computer-aided drafting, mapping, land records, or related field; OR
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Cartography, Geographic Information Systems, Surveying, Computer Science or related field with 1 year of experience; OR
- Possess a State of North Carolina Property Mapper Certification with 3 years of experience in GIS, computer-aided drafting, mapping, land records, or related field.
- Must be able to obtain NC Carolina Property Mapper Certification within 2 years of hire.
- Candidates with an understanding and knowledge of the North Carolina Machinery Act and Land Record processes are highly preferred.
Pay Scale:
- Tax GIS Specialist I: $27.4519 - $45.2885/hour
- Tax GIS Specialist II: $30.4327 - $50.1923/hour
