Description
The Solid Waste & Recycling Division is primarily responsible for the disposal of Municipal Solid Waste generated in the County as required by North Carolina State Law and in accordance with all applicable local regulations. Gaston County currently uses an integrated solid waste management plan consisting of sanitary landfilling, compost / mulch, recycling, and related waste reduction programs.
Examples of Duties
The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.
- Performs tire stacking duties, laying them inside a tractor trailer along with all related paperwork.
- Processes recyclables that are brought to the baling facility.
- Assists with HHW events and voting machine delivery and pick up.
- Inspects and cleans out all heavy equipment radiators. Cleans all landfill vehicles inside and out.
- Collects recyclables from recycling / convenience sites and deliver to landfill as needed. Also provides supplies to recycling sites as needed. Helps clean recycling sites quarterly.
- Pulls unacceptable waste items / recyclables from MSW and C&D working face daily.
- Performs landscaping tasks by mowing, trimming weeds and edging. Cleans around curbs in front of landfill
- Gathers litter throughout entire job site. Assembles and maintains litter fences.
- Fuels all heavy equipment daily.
- Controls traffic flow by flagging to assist customers when scales are down.
- Controls dust by distributing water on haul roads.
- Mixes and applies alternate daily cover material to the landfill daily.
- Makes sure supplies are stocked in scale.
- Other duties as assigned including but not limited to carpentry, general maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of eighth grade; prefer high school or GED. All candidates must have, or be able to obtain, a valid North Carolina Driver's License, without driving restrictions.
Additional Information
The applicant selected must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
