Definition
An employee in this class rides a school bus on an assigned route(s) and assists the Bus Driver with safety, movement, management, and care of students boarding the bus, leaving the bus, or being transported on it.  The Bus Monitor will require students to conform to the rules and regulations established by the local Board of Education for the safety of students riding school buses.

Duties and Responsibilities
Lifts and carries students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs, if applicable.
Supervises student(s) as they board and leave the bus and cross streets.
Takes children into the building and helps them find their way.
Learns and adapts to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs, if applicable.
Manages student behavior and reports student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator.
Becomes familiar with all routes to and from the school campus to be of assistance to the driver.
Supervises the use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seats by students.
Makes certain that students are seated while the bus is in motion.
Follows emergency procedures and helps driver administer first aid, if necessary.
Operates equipment according to established safety procedures.
Follows established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, assisting students, etc.
Becomes familiar with and follows procedures established by transportation and/or Exceptional Children Department, if applicable.
Helps driver keep the bus clean.
Assumes responsibility for performing the personal care required under the Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) during the pick-up, transporting, and unloading of students.
Maintains regular attendance.
Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Good knowledge of care and discipline of students.
Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses.
Demonstrates patience and understanding.
Ability to maintain the discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus.
Ability to deal patiently and effectively with students.
Ability to complete required reports.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians or students and with school personnel.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Understanding of and compassion for students with disabilities, if applicable.

Physical Requirements 
• Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 
• Requires the ability to read correspondence, reports, instructions, etc.  Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
• Requires ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
• Requires the ability to talk and/or hear.  Requires sufficient hearing ability to distinguish warning sounds made by horns, screeching tires, sirens, grade-crossing alarms, and train whistles.
• Able to lift and carry students, if applicable. 

Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
Some experience in working with students (experience with physically handicapped and/or related where applicable, preferred).

Special Requirements
Follows all rules, policies, and procedures of Gaston County Schools, along with regulations pertaining to the Transportation Department, including but not limited to driver misconduct and reporting accidents.
Able to climb ladders.
Willing to clean bus after students/passengers daily.
Must be safety conscious.
Performs all duties that meet legal requirements for students with disabilities, if applicable.

Reports To:  Principal or Assistant Principal

Classification: Non-Exempt

Salary:  $17.02/hour
