Definition
Employees perform a variety of management and supervisory functions related to planning and organizing inspections to achieve and maintain high levels of cleanliness for Gaston County Schools (GCS). Responsibilities encompass coordinating and conducting monthly inspection audits for all school and administrative sites. Additionally, this includes prioritizing, coordinating, and recommending cleaning schedules, as well as facilitating and reviewing audits to ensure adherence to custodial and health and sanitation standards. An employee in this role is responsible for managing and supervising schools identified as a priority. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor conditions. Supervision is provided by the Director of Maintenance, and performance is evaluated through work reviews, discussions, feedback from school personnel, and adherence to policies, procedures, and health and sanitation standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinates and plans school/administrative monthly site inspections for custodial and minor maintenance services for the buildings and grounds of the school system; inspects buildings for adherence to established custodial standards and practices.
- Works with staff to ensure employees are trained on how to safely operate equipment and use the proper chemicals and supplies safely.
- Communicate department and school system expectations, policies, procedures, and processes to staff.
- Manages building custodians for optimum cleaning inventory and schedule recommendations based on inspection scores.
- Collaborates with principals to establish, review, and uphold cleaning standards for all schools and administrative sites.
- Assist in evaluating custodial products to be used in the system, and ensuring that environmental standards are adhered to and maintained.
- Informs staff of policies, procedures, and processes of the department and the school system; enforces these for the department.
- Meets with school administrators to plan and schedule renovations and special projects.
- Collaborates closely with the Logistics Manager, Facilities Director, and maintenance staff to secure resources needed for project completion and to address areas of concern.
- Works closely with vendors to gain product knowledge and expertise.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the operational needs and expectations for standards of cleanliness in the school system.
- Considerable knowledge of International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA) standards.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, equipment, and supplies used in the cleaning and appearance of buildings.
- Ability to understand state and federal regulations appropriate to management and operations of custodial services including but not limited to state purchasing laws; knowledge of vendor bidding processes.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions of the required job functions.
- Ability to identify problems and develop methods and ways to resolve them independently.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, administrators, vendors, state and local officials, employees, and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively with school administrators, staff, supervisors, students, employees, and the general public.
- Ability to maintain and keep a variety of records and reports.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Project, Publisher).
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing.
- Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
- Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops; and lawn equipment including weed-eaters, riding mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, etc.
- Not restricted from climbing ladders.
- Work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, hazards associated with maintenance and equipment operations, gases, oils, and fumes.
Preferred Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent and knowledge of basic methods, supplies, and tools used in custodial work.
- Five (5) to Seven (7) years of custodial experience and a minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience, preferably in an educational environment.
Special Requirements
- The employee must possess and maintain an appropriate driver’s license recognized by North Carolina for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Employees are governed by Gaston County Schools’ Policy Code(s): 6335/7270/7260, "Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace" which spells out specific drug testing requirements, procedures, and consequences of positive alcohol or drug tests or arrest for alleged violation of any alcohol or drug-related offenses.
- Provides support to other trades and work groups as needed in the operation of Gaston County Schools.
- Performs other duties as assigned including after-hours and emergency response.
