Definition
The employee will perform skilled work in the plumber repair, maintenance, and installation of water, waste disposal, air and gas systems. Work assignments result from discussions or written instructions from a superior and are in terms of objectives to be accomplished. Blueprints may accompany large installation jobs; however, the employee is expected to plan, layout, draw complementary sketches, and carry out work to its completion. The employee will also be responsible for the evaluation of existing systems and equipment and assist in predictive and preventive maintenance.  Work is performed independently under the supervision of the Plumbing Foreman.

Distinguishing Features of the Class
The employee will perform skilled, journeyman level works with substantial variation in the repair, maintenance, and installation of water, waste disposal, air and gas systems, and foodservice equipment.  Work requires the interpretation of prepared sketches, diagrams, schematics, and blueprints. Work assignments are performed in accordance with accepted practices. The employee resolves most problems independently, except for work of an unusual nature, in which a Foreman may be consulted.  The employee is primarily responsible for the upkeep of a particular region adhering to the structure of a weekly schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for maintaining all plumbing within GCS.
Collaborates with County Code Enforcement, County Health Department, and County Environmental Protection, North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR).
Design modifications and small installation projects, which include equipment and pipe sizing, layout and associated work under the supervision of the plumbing Foreman.
Review work upon completion for adherence to established trade practices and safety standards and is further evaluated on the basis of continued and efficient operations of repaired systems and installations.
Researches new equipment, codes, and procedures for possible adoption and use.
Reviews plans and specifications for new construction and participates in job inspection as requested by the Foreman. 
Reviews proposed new construction programs and makes recommendations for inclusion in the project. Surveys sites for renovation, expansion, and upgrades.
Plans, schedules, budgets, and secures necessary materials to successfully complete repairs.
Follow safety guidelines and regulations in performing the assigned tasks, operating required equipment, such as power tools, hand tools, and motor vehicles.  
Complete installs, services, and repairs following manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints, and manufacturer’s specifications.
Tests malfunctioning plumbing systems and equipment.
Installs, maintains, alters, and repairs piping, fixtures, accessories, and equipment.
Measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles, and installs all forms of piping.
Replaces damaged or broken pipes and support accessories.
Maintains an inventory of plumbing replacement parts.
Maintains and completes all work order requests.
Provides support to other trades and workgroups as needed in the operation of Gaston County Schools.
Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the North Carolina State Plumbing Codes, North Carolina State Fire Sprinkler Codes M-1, and North Carolina State Fuel Gas Code.
Considerable knowledge of the practices, materials, and equipment used in the repair, maintenance and installation of school plumbing systems, including water heaters, water storage tanks, wells, waste treatment systems, water coolers, etc.
Working knowledge of water supply systems and required treatment and testing, especially as it pertains to well water supply systems.
Working knowledge of installation and maintenance of air and natural gas piping systems.
Ability to diagnose equipment and system malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures.
Ability to design and install water, waste, and storm drainage systems.
Ability to locate and correct defects in plumbing systems and equipment.
Ability to review plans and specifications for new construction.
Ability to plan and layout work and develop designs from rough sketches and oral instructions
Skilled in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary for plumbing work.
Ability to understand and work from blueprints, schematics, sketches or penciled drawings, manuals, and manufacturer’s specifications.
Ability to communicate effectively to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others.
Ability to understand and follow oral or written directions.
Ability to physically carry out journeyman-level work as required accomplishing department goals.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate required equipment and motor vehicles, use measuring devices, and inspect work for accuracy, thoroughness, and adherence to work standards and instructions.
Completes some work on-site necessitating being physically able to work off ladders, lifts, work in crawl spaces, above ceilings, and on roofs, etc. under prevailing environmental conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience
High School Graduate or GED preferred.
Prefer Two (2) Year Degree in Plumbing.
Minimum Five (5) to Seven (7) Years Plumbing Experience.
NC Plumber’s license based on State requirements as directed by the North Carolina Board of Plumbing Examiners. 


Special Requirements
This employee must hold a plumber’s license based on State requirements as directed by the North Carolina Board of Plumbing Examiners. 
Employee must possess or be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate driver’s license recognized by North Carolina for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Some occasional overtime and weekend work may be required, depending on workload or work requests.
Provides support to other trades and workgroups as needed in the operation of Gaston County Schools.
Some occasional emergency response work may be required.


Certification/Licensure Compensation – not to exceed twelve percent (12%)

This position may be eligible for up to a 12% increase:
Plumbing, Class 1 12% increase
Sub. Surface Waste Treatment, Class 1 12% increase
Waste Water, Class 1 12% increase
Waste Water, Class 2 12% increase
Wells, (C-Well)   9% increase

This Position Reports Directly to:  Plumbing Foreman/Maintenance Administrator

Salary:  Grade 63, Step 10 (entry level)

Classification:  Non-exempt
