Definition
The Turnaround Principal at Woodhill Elementary School will serve as the strategic and instructional leader of a Title 1 urban elementary school, designated as an NC Restart School with Restart flexibility. The principal will oversee all school operations, implement innovative programs, and lead school improvement initiatives in alignment with NC state mandates for principals. This role requires fostering a collaborative and inclusive school culture, utilizing Restart flexibility for creative staffing, budgeting, and instructional strategies, and focusing on driving for results, data-driven decision-making, and culturally relevant and trauma-informed practices to support student achievement and well-being.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of instructional programs that leverage Restart flexibility to meet the diverse needs of students, ensuring alignment with NC state standards and mandates for school leadership.
- - Oversee school operations, including staff management, innovative budget planning, and resource allocation, while complying with North Carolina policies for principals.
- - Implement culturally relevant and trauma-informed practices that create a supportive and responsive learning environment for all students, particularly those affected by socio-economic challenges or adverse experiences.
- - Use Restart flexibility to implement unique solutions for staffing, curriculum development, and scheduling to drive student success and measurable results.
- - Foster a collaborative and inclusive school culture that empowers teachers and staff to implement culturally responsive teaching methods and trauma-informed practices in the classroom.
- - Lead change management and school improvement initiatives with a focus on driving for results and data to inform instructional practices, monitor student progress, and adjust strategies to maximize impact.
- - Analyze and use data to assess student learning outcomes, teacher effectiveness, and overall school performance, in compliance with NC state mandates for data use and reporting.
- - Ensure compliance with Title 1 regulations and effectively use federal funds to support educational programs, close achievement gaps, and improve student learning outcomes.
- - Engage parents, families, and community partners to promote student success, especially through programs that honor students' cultural backgrounds and address social-emotional needs.
- - Monitor and adjust student-centered policies that promote equity, inclusivity, and social-emotional development while adhering to NC state student support and development guidelines.
- - Manage all aspects of the Advanced Teacher Path Grant.
- - Participate fully in all aspects of the UVA Partnerships program, including workshops, coaching sessions, and collaborative projects.
- Performs other related duties as needed and assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proven experience in educational leadership, preferably in a Title 1 or urban school setting, with knowledge of or experience in Restart Schools and their flexibilities.
- - Strong understanding of curriculum development, instructional strategies, data-driven decision-making, and culturally relevant or trauma-informed practices to support diverse student populations.
- - Familiarity with NC state mandates for principals, including requirements related to school improvement, teacher evaluation, and student outcomes.
- - Preferred experience in leading change management initiatives and driving for results in school transformation or turnaround efforts.
- - Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- - Ability to lead, motivate staff, manage budgets, and engage diverse communities while utilizing Restart flexibility to implement innovative solutions and achieve educational outcomes in accordance with NC state leadership mandates.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, etc.
- Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and climb or balance.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate required equipment and motor vehicles. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data, work with records processes, and do extensive reading and research.
- Demonstrated managerial abilities.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Must hold NC Licensure in School Administration (00012).
- Minimum of three completed years as Assistant Principal and/or Central Office experience on or before June 30, 2025.
- Must be rated Proficient and/or higher on Principal and/or AP evaluation instrument.
- Demonstrated instructional leadership ability.
- Demonstrated managerial abilities.
