What are the responsibilities and job description for the Direct Support Professional position at Gaston Skills Inc/ Salem Industries?
An employee in this postion provides assistance with acquisiton, retention, or improvement in self-help, socialization and adaptive skills, which takes place in a non-residential setting, separate from home or facility in which the participant resides.
- Guides and instructs participants toward accomplishment of goals set by the individual's person centered plan. Staff is to assist the participant to attain and maintain his/her maximum functional level.
- Complete and pass al required initial and any refresher trainings for direct care position before working with population served.
- Must successfully complete First-Aid and CPR, NCI-a (Prevention) and NCI-B Core Plus (Restrictive Intervention) and DMH/DD/SUS Core Competencies and required refresher trainings
- Ensure Proper documentation is completed daily according to State Standards
- Safely transition participant from point to point per participant needs within the facility
- Responsible for the confidentiality of all records, files, and individual services provided and documentation.
- Maintains high standards for quality
- Maintains constant participation in appropriate professional development and continuing education activities, including monthly supervision and meetings.
- Maintains constant vigililance to ensure safety measures are carried out and is familiar with the evacuation procedures, and community safety measures.
- Display appropriate interactions at all times consistent with the needs and goals of the participants being served
- Maintains compsure in intense situations when behaviors occur and effectively calm the participant through the least restrictive intervention
- Performs other duties as assigned as related to the position of Direct Support Professional
- Ability to attain a working knowledge of training methods and techniques appropriate for use with an individual with Intellectual Disabilities (behavior modification, modeling, normalization, goal planning)
- Ability to deal patiently and fairly with participants and provides an atmosphere of equality.

- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Ability to stand/walk on feet at least 70% of the day if needed to assist persons served in meeting their goals.
- Ability to instruct and demonstrate steps in a productive work process, emphasizing appropriate work habits and safety measures while mainitaining a consistent working relationship with all participants.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationshipss with other employees and present an atmosphere of teamwork.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of CARF standards.
Must meet the requirements for DSP. Must have a High School Diploma/GED. Must pass a criminal background check. A Health Care Registry check as required in accordance with 10A NCAC 27G.200. If providing transportation, have a North Carolina or other valid driver's license, a safe driving record and an acceptable level of automobile liability insurance.
