General Summary: A non-exempt position responsible for preparing the procedure rooms for cases, assisting physicians and the nursing staff during procedures, and maintaining a safe and clean procedure environment in the ambulatory surgical center.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Helps RN to gather medical history information. Provides patient care as outlined by state Nurse Practice Act, including nursing assessments, taking vital signs, and assisting in procedures as directed.
- Assists patients with activities such as ambulation, transfers, dressings, grooming, and nutrition. Transports patients safely using appropriate equipment such as wheelchairs.
- Observes patient condition and immediately communicates changes/concerns to RN, LPN, or Clinical Nurse Manager.
- Follows emergency procedures including using CPR if necessary.
- Helps stock department equipment and supplies.
- Rotates in scope room with disinfecting, sterilizing and performing checks. Maintains equipments integrity. Documents steps taken performing these tasks as required.
- Responsible for room set up and cleaning following procedures ensuring infection control techniques are followed. .
- Other duties as assigned.
Education: Successful completion of state-approved certified nursing assistant training program; minimum 75 hours of training including 16 hours of supervised clinical training.
Experience:
Minimum two years of experience as a certified nursing assistant. Experience in gastroenterology preferred.
Other Requirements: Nursing Assistant Certification by state. Ongoing BCLS certification.

Equipment Operated: Standard medical equipment, including pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitor, and wheelchairs.
Work Environment: Ambulatory surgery center. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to an ambulatory surgical setting.
Mental/Physical Requirements: Varied activities including standing, sitting, walking, turning, stooping, reaching, bending, and lifting supporting debilitated and/or unsteady patients. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Must hear and see well enough to obtain and document information accurately. Must communicate well enough to answer questions and converse over the telephone to be thoroughly understood. Occasional stress related to patient load.
DUTIES AND TASKS GI TECHNOLOGIST IN THE ASC:
1. Responsible for the preparation of equipment needed for all procedures.
2. Assists physician/endoscopist with all procedures.
3. Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean environment in the procedure room.
4. Responsible for manual cleaning, high-level disinfection and sterilization of all instruments as outlined in the Centers policies and procedures.
5. Knowledgeable in setting up equipment.
6. Maintains inventory of supplies for efficient ordering.
7. Keeps supplies and laundry neatly in appropriate area.
8. Provides back-up support for preparing patient prior to the procedure.
9. Responsible for ordering supplies under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager (ASC)
10. Anticipates needed equipment and has it available at the start of each case.
11. Demonstrates ability to provide assistance in procedures performed in the ambulatory surgery center.
12. Obtains patient specimens as directed.
13. Keeps disinfectant solutions up to date.
14. Responds appropriately to patient questions.
15. Functions within authorized limits and does not practice nursing without a license.
16. Obtains blood pressures and vital signs.
17. Immediately informs Clinical Nurse Manager of ASC of damage to equipment.
18. Communicates relevant information to Clinical Nurse Manager, physicians and staff to maintain continuity of care.
19. Demonstrates good judgment and reasoning when investigating and problem-solving.
20. Assists patients and physicians as needed.
21. Seeks guidance and direction in the performance of duties.
