Job Title: School Nutrition Manager Supervisor: School Nutrition Director
Job Classification: Non-Exempt Pay Grade: 55
JOB GOAL: Perform managerial and supervisory duties operating a school food service
operation. Collaborate with others in the school, school district, and community to operate a
successful school food service operation, while complying with state and federal standards and
implementing School Board Policies.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years work experience in school food service, food service, management, or equivalent
- Functional skills in reading and writing English, basic mathematics and computer skills
- Ability to operate computer to include but not limited to: downloads, food production records, food inventory, end of day and month procedures, lunch loan notices to students, weekly roster to be used in the event of power failure, and the ability to send and receive e-mail
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Training in safety and sanitation, cooking, menu planning/production, nutrition/wellness, and communication/marketing
- National Food Safety Manager Certification or willingness to obtain
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Follow instructions and complete tasks efficiently
- Communicate effectively in written and oral form with people using positive interpersonal skills
- Multi-task various work assignments in a time efficient manner
- Knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), food safety and
sanitation principles
REPORTS TO: School Nutrition Director
SUPERVISES: Assigned Food and Nutrition Services Personnel
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Nutrition Integrity
- Provide an atmosphere that embraces the mission of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS)
Department
- Ensure all meals served meet current meal standards, meal pattern requirements, including working with health professionals in providing meals to special needs students
- Establish a leadership role in assisting with nutrition education in the school community
- Provide appealing, healthy meals that encourage meal consumption
Program Accountability
- Maintain program integrity and accountability through compliance with all federal, state,
and local regulations, and district policies and procedures
- Ensure compliance with school/department/district mission and vision statements and
objectives
Financial Management and Recordkeeping
- Operate within established guidelines for a financial management system that provides a
cost-effective program of high integrity
- Provide effective office organization and paper management techniques to ensure all
records and supporting documentation are maintained in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and policies
- Organize and manage the business functions to maintain an efficient and effective
operation
- Oversee cashiering activities involving the collection of monies and recording of daily
receipts; records daily student and adult participation totals; maintain daily operational
records; prepare routine financial reports; operates Point-of-Service (POS) computerized system and perform related cashiering tasks, as required
Personnel Management
- Manage staff according to all federal, state, and local district employment laws, policies,
and regulations
- Communicate effectively with school administration, FNS district office, and food service staff
- Create an atmosphere for employee productivity and satisfaction in the workplace
- Implement organizational techniques to accomplish job tasks with efficiency
- Integrate and provide staff training that promotes multi-skilled employees and standards for evaluating employee performance
- Assist school administration in evaluating employee performance in accordance with local district policy and utilize appropriate procedures in monitoring employee performance/behaviors
- Provide leadership that values diversity
Sanitation, Safety, and Security
- Provide an environment conducive to protecting the health and well-being of customers
through high levels of sanitation standards
- Complete required safety and sanitation training courses and maintain current national food safety manager certification, as required
- Respond to food safety issues in an expedient and effective manner
- Provide leadership to ensure a safe environment for work performance
- Provide leadership to ensure a secure work environment during an emergency or crisis and assist neighboring schools as needed
Food Production
- Apply management principles to establishing and maintaining high standards of control for quality of food production and distribution
- Provide a system for preparing and maintaining records that reflect an accurate report of
planned menus, and food produced, served and discarded
- Ensure FNS credibility through daily monitoring of food production procedures
- Ensure proper leftover use and documentation in compliance with federal, state, and local
regulations; monitor batch-cooking to control waste and avoid overproduction
Service
- Ensure compliance with developed meal and paper standards for providing and maintain
quality in the presentation and service of food, special meal programs, and catering services
- Provide leadership to ensure school meals are served in a positive manner
- Communicate effectively utilizing appropriate customer service and interpersonal skills
Equipment Use/Care
- Establishes administrative responsibility for all food service equipment through proper use and care
- Operates the program in compliance with all energy and water conservation principles and follows proper procedures for reporting maintenance needed
Procurement
- Ensures that district receiving and storage procedures are followed
- Checks food supplies; estimates quantities, orders supplies, and participates in taking
inventory of freezer, cooler, and storeroom
Marketing
- Implements a marketing plan to create an atmosphere that attracts customers including
students, teachers, administrators, other support staff, and the community
- Provides leadership that promotes and creates an interest in the role of FNS in the school
and community
- Promotes department marketing efforts, mission, and objectives
Professional Development
- Provide leadership that sets high professional standards
- Establish and demonstrate professional status in the education community through
continuing education to obtain required Continuing Education Units (CEU’s)
- Represent FNS in a positive and professional manner at department-sponsored events and
actively participate and attend required department manager meetings and/or functions
