GENERAL MANAGER
The Gateway Hotel & Conference Center at Iowa State University is seeking a General Manager.
The Gateway is the largest, full-service hotel and conference center in Ames, Iowa, with 187 guest rooms, a three-meal restaurant, and 18,000 sq. ft. of banquet and meeting space.
The General Manager is responsible for all aspects of operations at the hotel and day-to-day staff management to ensure first class hospitality is being delivered that exceeds guest expectations. They must provide leadership and strategic planning to all departments in support of our service culture to maximize operations and guest satisfaction and be responsible for managing the Hotel’s Management team. The General Manager is the ambassador for the hotel and works very closely with the hotel owners and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Oversees daily shift reports of hotel operations.
- A strong understanding of P&L statements and the ability to react with impactful strategies.
- Maximize room yield and revenue through weekly yield meetings.
- Deploy rate strategy to maximize RevPAR.
- Manage and develop the Hotel Executive team to ensure career progression and development.
- Be accountable for responsibilities of department heads and take ownership of all guest complaints.
- Manage employee and team performance to ensure guest satisfaction.
- Work to improve operational efficiency and productivity.
- Monitor and track labor and profitability.
- Strive to continually improve employee satisfaction.
- Oversee training and staff development.
- Responsible for safeguarding the quality of operations both (internal & external audits).
- Maintain legal compliance, along with company policies, procedures, and standards.
- Maintain the highest safety and security standards for hotel guests and employees.
- Follow up with accident investigations and works proactively to ensure a safe work environment.
- Develop and implement strategies to achieve employee and guest satisfaction goals as measured by our comment cards and Internet feedback results.
- Monitor and share guest feedback for continued growth.
- Ensure that the hotel and property are clean and maintained, to exceed guest expectations.
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education/experience.
- 5-10 years of work experience in a related position in the hospitality industry.
- 2-3 years of experience as a General Manager or Asst. General Manager.
- Must be able to work flexible shifts including holidays and weekends.
- Experienced with hotel property and reservation management systems.
- The hotel uses VisualOne PMS and iHotelier reservations systems.
- Additional computer systems experience with ADP, Microsoft Office applications, Word, Excel, and Outlook preferred.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to work independently, without direct supervision as part of a cohesive team.
- Ability to think clearly, analyze and resolve problems, while exercising good judgment.
- Knowledgeable of federal, state and local laws governing equal employment opportunity and civil rights, occupational safety and health, wage and hour issues, and labor relations.
