What are the responsibilities and job description for the Personal Chef position at Gather Round Chef Service?
The position of Personal Chef is a part-time employee position that works directly with clients. The position begins with part-time commitments and can scale up as new clients arise.
Duties of the position:
- Cook for each client on a regular ongoing schedule (weekly, monthly, etc)
- Shop for groceries in consideration of the client’s preferences, the menu plan, and the client’s home inventory
- Learn and use effectively the layouts, equipment, supplies, and containers of each client’s kitchen
- Make 3-5 meals, with ≤ 6 servings per meal, per cooking session
- [AT FIRST] Follow the recipes provided by the supervisor
- [WHEN READY] Plan menus directly with the client, providing own recipes
- Comply with client’s dietary profile to navigate around disclosed allergens, restrictions, and preferences
- Package, label, and store each meal and meal component (e.g. a salad or sauce in a separate container) according to the menu plan and food safety guidelines
- Give the client clear and accurate heating and serving instructions
- Comply with food safety guidelines as much as a home-kitchen setting allows
- Clean the kitchen (dishes, equipment, counters, sink, stove, floor) thoroughly after each cooking session
- Dispose of trash, recycling, and compost according to the client’s guidance
- Maintain the client’s supply of containers
- Relay all client-based receipts promptly and accurately to the supervisor for invoicing
- Report all incidents, accidents, scheduling conflicts, and problems promptly and accurately to the supervisor

Possible Duties based on willingness, availability, and negotiated compensation:
- Lead Cooking Lesson Dinner Parties for private groups up to 12 participants
- Lead “Teach Me How to Dinner” cooking lesson series for individuals or couples
- Prepare drop-off family-style catering for groups up to 20
- Engage in networking on behalf of Gather Round Chef Service
Qualifications of the ideal candidate:
- Love of cooking
- Strong technical cooking skills and expertise with a wide variety of cuisines, ingredients, techniques, equipment, and dietary profiles (e.g. vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher, miscellaneous preferences & aversions)
- Ability to follow a recipe with delicious and consistent results
- Ability to adapt amidst changing circumstances, e.g. making a suitable substitution when a store or client lacks a certain ingredient, a client lacks a certain piece of equipment, or a client’s dietary profile requires it
- Terrific organization skills
- Pleasant and personable demeanor with clients and supervisor
- Superior integrity in all interactions with clients and supervisor
- Clear, responsive, and considerate communication with clients and supervisor
- Ability to interact with client when present in the home, including while cooking
- Reliable all-weather transportation to and from clients’ homes and their preferred grocery store
- Reliable technology to organize and track recipes, grocery lists, eligible mileage, and receipts
- Up-to-date ServSafe Food Handler or Manager Certification
- Ability to provide and maintain own knife roll, essential tools, safety kit, apron & towels, and spice kit
- Permission to work in the United States of America
- Ability to pass VT and USA background checks
Gather Round Chef Service is a Burlington, VT-based personal chef company that provides custom-cooked meals to help busy households relax and connect over a good meal. Custom cooking is at the core of Gather Round’s model, allowing all meals to conform to each client’s dietary restrictions and preferences. To achieve custom cooking, chefs cook in each client’s home, use each client’s own equipment, and maintain an inventory of each client’s own ingredients and supplies.
Gather Round also helps folks connect and relax over good food by teaching cooking lessons and classes. The curriculum is custom to each individual or group’s desires, but the goal is consistent: to help people increase their confidence, technical skill, and playfulness in the kitchen.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $200.00 - $300.00 per day
