Definition

 

The Ethnic Studies Program:

 

• Currently housed in the Social Science department, the Ethnic Studies Program is a developing program within Gavilan College. Because of the California Community College Ethnic Studies graduation requirement, this program is growing rapidly in course offerings and enrollment.

 

• Current course offerings in the Ethnic Studies program include:

 

• ETHN 2 - Introduction to Chicanx Studies

 

• ETHN 3B - Sociology of Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Identity (cross-listed with Sociology)

 

• ETHN 10B - African-American History (cross-listed with History)

 

• Additional Ethnic Studies Courses are in development and review.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics

 

The ideal candidate for this position is an educator who actively embraces building an Ethnic Studies program to serve populations historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education. With knowledge of both the strengths embodied by our diverse students and the barriers they face, the ideal candidate is well-poised to teach, support, and mentor Gavilan students. The ideal candidate desires connection with students and the community beyond the classroom and works to foster cross-cultural and anti-racist collaboration whether through creating research, scholarship, media, art, or cultural/political engagement opportunities. In joining Gavilan College, the ideal candidate thrives as a faculty member continually striving to employ anti-racist pedagogy and develop success strategies to meet the needs of historically underserved students.

 

Essential Duties

 

• Teach 14-16 lecture-equivalent hours per semester, which may include in-person instruction at the Hollister and Gilroy campuses as well as online teaching.

 

• Create inclusive, student-centered learning environments that support the growth and success of diverse learners through thoughtful course preparation, effective teaching methodologies, and meaningful feedback.

 

• Cultivate relationships with students to support their growth through office hours and regular interaction (both in person and online).

 

• Create, assess, and update curriculum to meet the needs of diverse students in all modalities.

 

• Actively engage in department and division meetings, events, and initiatives.

 

• Contribute to campus committees and decision-making processes that support the college's mission and goals.

 

• Participate in ongoing professional learning, particularly around anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

 

• Adhere to department, division, and district policies and procedures for faculty employees.

 

• Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.

 

• Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles

 

• Develop effective online course materials and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 §55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.

 

• Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).

 

• Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.

 

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

 

• Ability to conduct classes in a virtual learning environment using Canvas or other methods of remote learning.

 

• Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.

 

• Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.

 

• Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human difference.

 

• Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.

 

Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience

 

• Master's in the Ethnic Studies field

 

• OR Master's in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies

 

• OR the equivalent

 

• Demonstrated ability to develop and employ culturally relevant course content, anti-racist pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or from historically underrepresented groups.

Desirable Attributes:

 

• Ability to collaboratively envision and foster a thriving Ethnic Studies program that offers a diversity of courses and engages students with the campus and community.

 

• Demonstrated ability to teach Chicanx Studies courses.

 

• Experience utilizing an equity framework to develop student-centered curriculum, assess student learning, and utilize support programs to increase student retention and success.

 

• Experience incorporating service learning or civic engagement, such as working with on and off campus communities and organizations to create exhibitions and events that showcase oral histories, highlight communities of color, and connect students to movements for positive change.
