JOB SUMMARY : The Inpatient Counselor participates in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and families, assisting in the facilitation of the rehabilitation program, with a focus on helping patients adjust to injury (TBI, stroke, spinal cord injury), medical illnesses, PTSD, chronic pain, substance abuse, and general mental health concerns. Clinical responsibilities are primary Inpatient, but may involve occasional Outpatient Consultations or Crisis Intervention.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Counseling
-Conducts a diagnostic interview of patients for whom Psychology consults have been requested within 2 business days of receiving the consult.
-Develops and implements treatment plans and conducts, as appropriate, short-term, evidence-based treatments utilizing a variety of interventions within their scope of practice (such as cognitive behavioral therapy) with the goal of supporting adjustment to, and rehabilitation from, injury (traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury), medical illness, substance abuse, chronic pain, PTSD, and other mental health issues. Engages family members as appropriate.
-Monitors the effectiveness of treatment plans.
-Identifies and explores community resources for continuing care and support for patients post discharge. For example, identifies programs for addiction, brain injury, homelessness.
-Assesses the patient's need for continued care in Outpatient Psychology and refers patient to Outpatient Counselors.
-Performs crisis intervention, following departmental policy, with patients and families, etc. as necessary.
-Develops and conducts groups following the Psychology Department guidelines.
Documentation
-Thoroughly documents, according to coding guidelines, all therapeutic activity and ongoing care on the patient's behalf. Completes documentation within 48 hours.
-Responds to inquiries and corrects coding and/or documentation as indicated by the Coding Department.
-Inputs charges, as well as clinically-important but not chargeable services, within 3 days.
-Assists with chart audits.
Productivity
-Meets productivity standards as set by the Psychology Department.
-Optimizes time and patient care by pre-scheduling visits to patients. Works with other inpatient staff to coordinate care of the patient.
Continuing Education
-Maintains continuing education and professional responsibilities with state certification agencies.
Other Duties
-Participates in unit team meetings and communicates to team and other staff as needed.
-Participates in hospital committees with the approval of the Director of Psychology
-Participates in orientation and training of new employees.
-Follows established coverage guidelines of the Psychology Department for scheduled PTO and unscheduled PTO (i.e. for snow and weather conditions).
-Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Master's degree or higher (i.e., LCSW, PhD or PsyD) required
*Current CT license within field/degree required
*1-3 years of experience required, preferably in a medical setting
WORK SCHEDULE:2 days/16 hours per week until mid-June, 2025. Thereafter, Counselor will have the opportunity to remain on staff per diem/as needed for future coverage needs.
