What are the responsibilities and job description for the Quarry Utility Operator position at GCC?
Experience & abilities you will need:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Five years at plant/three years in Quarry Department. Will accept related experience in similar operations.
Formal training or two years on-the-job training in the use and handling of explosives; formal training in explosive safety.
Solid background and extensive knowledge of rock, gypsum, formations and quarry operations.
Thorough knowledge of storage, inventory and transporting of explosives.
Hazardous material endorsement.
Ability to perform operational and preventive maintenance on equipment; basic mechanical skills.
Good safety record.
Good physical condition as position may require bending, kneeling, walking, standing, climbing, stairs and lifting; high degree of manual dexterity and coordination and good eye/hand coordination.
What you will do:
Under supervision of quarry supervisor, the utility operator will operate equipment, perform explosive handler duties with other utility operators, act as crusher operator or assistant crusher operator or act as a relief for operator on vacation or on sick leave.
Operate all large quarry equipment.
Relief operator when other quarry employees are off work. See job descriptions for Equipment Operator-Crusher, Asst. Equipment Operator-Crusher, and Equipment Operator-Quarry/Loader for specific duties. The utility Operator will be responsible for fulfilling the job duties of the position he relieves.
Blast limestone in main quarry using explosive charges.
Maintain record of explosives by date as dictated by State and Federal explosive handling procedures.
Drill and blast gypsum in off-plant locations.
Maintain and service excavator w/drill/hammer.
Will maintain a safe working environment, adhere to safety policies and practices, perform daily housekeeping of assigned area, perform daily workplace inspections, adhere to plant policies and proper use of plant radios.
Be familiar with MSHA safety rules, safety procedures for plant mobile equipment, explosives, lockout/tagout policy, confined space permit policy, hot work policy, emergency response plan, arc flash/shock and burn protection, proper containment and disposal process (via Waste Management Plan) for lubricants, paints/solvents and other environmentally sensitive materials.
Ensure quality of work performed, participate in continuous improvement system, observe and promote best practices, good time management and be able to troubleshoot/analyze root cause failure.
Will work where and when needed as directed by plant supervisory personnel to meet plant needs.
