Job Summary:
The Assistant Breeder advances the camelina breeding program through field observations, crosses, selections, and sample analysis. Supports a wide range of camelina breeding research activities.
Essential Functions:
- Advance the camelina breeding program through field observations, selections, and sample analysis at the company’s field testing sites
- Prepare seed for contra-season, chamber, greenhouse, nursery, and field analysis.
- Develop, select, and evaluate breeding material for potential commercial varieties.
- Evaluate, record data, and analyze field material for selection of varieties with commercial potential.
- Assist with design of trials and maps, planting, harvest, and herbicide applications during field seasons.
- Perform laboratory quality analysis for traits of interest.
- Coordinate the implementation and upkeep of Sustainable Oil’s inventory system. Maintain laboratory safety and support all safety goals on site.
- Lead processing efforts and indoor growth experiments.
- Communicate with other teams to improve inter-team and office dynamics while achieving the company’s goals.
- Understand and adhere to the breeding team’s established and approved SOPs (e.g., data tracking procedures).
- Perform a range of other duties as assigned to meet Sustainable Oil’s overarching business objectives.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Firm understanding of research methods, protocols, procedures, techniques, and equipment within specified areas.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with statistical analysis software, such as R.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Commercial Pesticide Applicators License or ability to obtain one.
- Valid US Driver’s License
- This position will be based in Great Falls, MT, with extensive daily travel and up to 10% overnight travel to field nurseries during the Camelina growing season.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in plant science, genetics, genomics, horticulture, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking in field
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time
- Requires frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
- Requires lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring equipment and materials
