POSITION PURPOSE:
The CVB Director is responsible for, but not limited to the following: overseeing all administrative, operating, sales/marketing, publicity, promotions and advertising functions of the Geary County Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB). To serve as a resource person to assist those persons, groups, and/or organizations that may be attempting to attract visitors, meetings, or conventions to the Geary County area. To serve as a public relations liaison acting on behalf of the CVB and the community, in efforts to promote the Geary County area as a whole.; and to provide responsive, courteous, and efficient service to County employees, residents, and the public.
This is an appointed position under the direction of the County Commission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties described below are indicative of what the CVB Director might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County Resolutions for the position of CVB Director. This position description is not designed to list all tasks and responsibilities of this position. Geary County reserves the right to revise or change job duties as the need may arise. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Design and execute the annual operating plan consistent with the mission, priorities and plans of the CVB.
- Prepare and administer an annual budget for support of department activities.
- Establish and maintain relationships with hotel/motel managers. Be fully familiar with any facilities, attractions and events within Geary County that have the capability to accommodate visitors for meetings, conventions, lodging, meals, and entertainment as well attracting the leisure traveler.
- Be aware of and search out grant opportunities for attraction development and marketing programs. Maintain the grant programs; promotion of programs, acceptance of applications, determine the economic impact, disbursement of funds after receiving completion report and tracking information in database.
- Coordinate special events and programs sponsored by the CVB.
- Supervise CVB employees, update job descriptions, and administer evaluations.
- Oversee CVAB meetings and consult with them on programs and expenditures of CVB.
- Oversee the design and production of publications to be utilized in promoting the Geary County area.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Attend meetings as directed by the BOCC/CVAB; and write monthly reports for CVAB and BOCC.
- Participate in organizations for the purpose of professional development and affiliated with the travel industry.
- Make presentations to other entities as needed.
- Perform additional duties as requested by the BOCC/CVAB.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Bachelors degree from a four-year college or university in advertising, marketing, public relations, hospitality services or a closely related field. Minimum of three (3) years experience in advertising, marketing, public relations, hospitality services or other related filed. An equivalent combination of education and experience meeting the above requirements will be considered. Progressively responsible supervisory experience preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of area history, area attractions and/or fishing and water sports.
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor, including skill in displaying a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
- Detail oriented.
- Able to work independently and meet deadlines in a multi-task environment,
- Able to work with diverse constituencies as a consensus builder with the ability to form coalitions among differing viewpoints.
- Requires employees to convey energetic, positive, intelligent, hands-on approach, with a strong sense of team, and the ability to maintain and grow the vision of Geary County CVB.
- Knowledge of retail management, tour operators, conventions, and meeting planners, as well as marketing and advertising.
- Able to think strategically and negotiate contracts.
- Able to plan, organize, and coordinate events.
- Sound fiscal management and budgeting skills.
- Skill in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software (Microsoft Office products preferred).
- Flexibility to work varied schedules including weekends and evenings.
- Able to develop, interpret and implement policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, warning labels, etc.
EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
- Able to operate various types of equipment standard office equipment, computer, and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
- Other equipment could be required.
- Must have and maintain a valid drivers license, and otherwise be able to operate a motor vehicle legally and safely in the State of Kansas.
