Position description

Under the supervision of the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education (VPUE), the Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Support and Executive Director of the Center for Academic Advising in the College (AVP / ED) serves as a member of the VPUE’s executive board to provide leadership on campuswide undergraduate academic planning and support in overseeing academic advising policy and practice.

The AVP / ED leads a management team that engages advising Directors from the College, as well as department advisors and undergraduate advising staff in academic units across campus, and advising directors from all undergraduate programs across UCLA. The incumbent will facilitate implementation of policy across campus to ensure consistency and quality for all students.

Directly and through subordinates, the AVP / ED is also responsible for development, administration, evaluation and supervision of multiple programs and initiatives under the Center for Academic Advising in the College, including College Academic Counseling, CAC-Athletics advising, Advising Communities of Excellence professional development program, the Bruin Readmission Program, the First Year Scholars Program, College advisor training, College Academic Mentors, CAC Peer Counseling, University Studies, advising assessment, REACH (Remote Engagement and Advising in the College Hub), and other initiatives to promote student success and retention. The incumbent directly supervises seven positions and leads a team in strategic planning to improve academic advising and student success.

Broad areas of responsibility include : (1) engaging in strategic planning and advising, (2) coordinating effective working relationships across units, (3) serving as a liaison with Academic Senate leadership, (4) participating in enrollment planning with regard to degree pathways and management, (5) serving as a liaison to the deans, chairs and other faculty regarding student academic planning and support, and (6) providing direct supervision of seven directors and coordinators.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a terminal degree in their appointee’s field and knowledge of issues in higher education; experience working with academic policy and programs at a large public research university; have knowledge of UCLA processes and procedures; have broad familiarity with existing curriculum, programs and services for UCLA undergraduates; have experience with academic advising in a higher education setting; be skilled in information retrieval and data management; be able to lead large and diverse constituencies; be able to practice strategic thinking and planning; demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively in programs and activities involving faculty, staff, and students; possess interpersonal skills to interact effectively with persons of differing social, educational, economic and cultural backgrounds; have the ability to be flexible and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission of UCLA, the Division of Undergraduate Education, and the Center for Academic Advising in the College (CAAC).

CAAC is part of the Division of Undergraduate Education within the UCLA College and provides academic advising and related programs and services to approximately 21,000 undergraduates and 700 student athletes. The Center is a collective of programs that nurtures students’ academic growth and maximizes their engagement at UCLA and beyond.

This is a full-time (100% time) position, with a projected February start date.
