Responsibilities:

As a Meat cutter at Gelson’s, you will play a key role in supporting the daily operations of our meat department. You will be at the forefront of the meat department operations. The meat cutter is responsible for cutting meat and preparing related products in the variety, size, quality, and trim prescribed by the department and company standards. You will ensure the meat cases are well stocked with fresh, high-quality meat and poultry products for our customers.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Cut, grind, wrap, weigh, and price all meat, fish, and poultry products.
• Code date and rotate all prepared cuts or products placed in storage areas to ensure proper rotation, quality, and freshness.
• Ensure meat case and refrigerated cases are adequately stocked and faced at all times.
• Handle damaged and/or spoiled products according to company policy and assist in controlling levels of damaged goods.
• Provide excellent customer service by assisting shoppers with product inquiries, locating items, and resolving any customer concerns.
• Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the department at all times.
• Assist in receiving and unloading merchandise and store products in designated storage areas.
• Collaborate with your team to implement effective merchandising strategies, including product displays, promotions, and signage.
• Assist in maintaining accurate inventory levels and product pricing. Stock and rotate products to ensure freshness and reduce waste.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and health and safety regulations. Follow safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure a clean and safe working environment.
• Embrace new challenges and be a flexible team player, taking on responsibilities as needed.
• Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Successful completion of an apprenticeship/training program.
• Previous experience in a grocery retail setting
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills
• Ability to lift and move heavy items and stand for extended periods
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
• Knowledge of grocery products, merchandising techniques, and inventory management
• Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Physical requirements:

• Continuous hand manipulation including, grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation
• Reaching above and at shoulder level
• Standing, walking, bending up to 5 hours per day
• Walking on uneven surfaces
• Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
• Driving moving equipment (Forklift / Power jack)
• Working near hazardous equipment (Baler, trash compactor)
• Exposure to dust, gas, fumes (Receiving dock)
• Exposure to extremes in temperature (Coolers)
