Gem Prep is a K- 12 college preparatory school. At least sixty percent of Gem Prep students will graduate high school with an associate’s degree and the remainder will graduate with at least 18 college credits. During the elementary years, Gem Prep believes in building a strong academic foundation to prepare students for the rigorous learning environment in grades 7-12.

Our school counselors play a vital role in shaping the culture of our schools and helping students lead a life of impact and choice. School counselors are responsible for supporting the emotional, social, academic, and character growth and well-being of Gem Prep students and families. Counselors are an integral part of the Gem Prep team working to ensure our students succeed in school and go on to lead self-sufficient, successful, and happy lives.
Counselors also serve as college preparatory advisors to a small number of 7-12 grade students, teaching and holding students accountable for competencies critical for their success in college and beyond. Counselors take ownership of the students’ success by providing support to each student they advise. ***Please note this posting is for the 25-26 school year***
Responsibilities
Ensure that 60% or more of Gem Prep students obtain an Associate’s Degree by high school graduation through professional development for staff, working with students individually and in groups, and maintaining a vision of excellence for every student.
Data communication on % of students on track to obtain an AA and % of seniors graduating with DC Communicate Advanced Opportunities Programs.
Ensure 100% of students have a signed Fast Forward Participation Form on file
Directly responsible for updating and maintaining current transcripts for secondary students
Partner with families in the preparation of secondary four- & six-year planners
Serve as a “contact teacher for some DC students
Provide information and resources for postsecondary education options, scholarships and financial aid information
Work with receptionists on communicating with students and families about graduation, planning, cap & gown ordering: Assist in the planning, preparation and implementation of graduation
Ensure that IDLA grades are entered in Power School by due date.
504 attendance, tracking and implementation. All plans and documentation housed in Enrich.
Coordinate any testing accommodations required by 504 plans in a timely manner with Director of Assessment.
Assign credit verification assessment as required for new students
Assist Director of Assessment with PSAT, SAT preparations and communication to students
Assist in proctoring the PSAT, SAT, ISAT, ISIP, NWEA and MAP
Provide a comprehensive guidance program for teachers to be implemented in classroom instruction
Caring Schools and 2nd Step Curriculum Implementation.
Provide regular one-on-one counseling or group counseling to students
Provide crisis intervention as needed
Setting goals with students and tracking progress towards those goals
Conducting regular assessments of current and emerging student and family needs
Share opportunities for Service Learning Projects/community connections with College Prep advisors
Provide recommendations to the staff and leadership team around approaches to working with struggling students.
Homeless Liaison for the school
