The Hawai’i Cultural and Language Resident will create materials that inform how the NOIRLab/Gemini North staff engage the local community and/or conduct operations and business in Hawaiʻi. Activities may include advising on lessons or activities, speaking at public stargazing events, and shadowing telescope operations. The Hawaiʻi Cultural & Language Resident will work closely with the Hawaiʻi Education and Engagement Manager in Hilo, Hawaiʻi to develop plans and specific goals, based on the needs of the observatory and the local community during the length of the residency.

This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely utilizes standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and copiers. The work environment is generally quiet and may involve working in close proximity to others, depending on the needs of the specific function.

The Hawaiʻi Cultural & Language Resident will work closely with the Hawaiʻi Education and Engagement Manager in Hilo, Hawaiʻi to develop plans and specific goals, based on the needs of the observatory and the local community during the length of the residency.
Essential Functions
- Provide strategic perspectives in planning, coordination and execution of education and engagement programming in Hawaiʻi.
- Engage in local community events and programs such as AstroDay, ʻOhana Stargazing, Journey Through the Universe, Summit Tours, etc.
- Evaluate and provide perspective on existing and potential new processes for telescope and business operations and maintenance rooted in local practices and culture.
- Advise observatory leadership on local community related issues and opportunities.
- Create Hawaiʻi-centered learning materials in the form of web pages, lessons, books, images, video, etc.
- Communicate clearly on goals and progress with the Hawaiʻi Education and Engagement Manager.
- Produce reports and/or presentations at the end of the residency to summarize work achieved.
- All AURA employees are responsible for the proper management and control of all AURA property within their work area, whether assigned to them or someone else. This responsibility includes reporting any known missing, stolen, or non-working property in their work area to their supervisor or the AURA Property Officer.
- Responsible for ensuring compliance with government award terms and conditions assigned to this position or subordinates of this position.
- Other duties as assigned
- Minimum 4 years of experience in education, engagement, and/or Hawaiian culture related work.
- A deep understanding, appreciation, and experience engaging with Hawaiʻi local and indigenous communities.
- Familiarity with the Hawaiian language (ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi).
- Proficient in the use of a computer including creating documents, sending emails, etc.
- Ability to work from home.
- Proficiency with the Hawaiian language (ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi).
- Knowledge of astronomical research and basic astronomy concepts.
- Ability to travel nationally in case the need arises for conferences, professional development, workshops, etc.
- Clean driving record.

- May occasionally need to position self to maintain computer and related tools.
- Seldomly needed to move objects up to 10 pounds.
- Constant communication with other individuals. Must be able to discern and exchange information as appropriate to the situation.
- Constant need to distinguish, discern, and identify a variety of objects and fine details with accuracy.
- Some travel may be necessary in or outside the contiguous United States including travel to the various observatory sites (Arizona, Chile and Hawai`i).
- Occasional work at high elevation summit sites may be required (summit elevations range from 6,800 feet to 14,000 feet)
