Job Summary:
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the collection, cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of medical instruments and equipment used during surgeries and medical procedures. This role ensures the proper sanitation and readiness of all tools and supplies for medical teams, adhering to strict infection control protocols and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Decontamination and Cleaning:
- Collect used and contaminated equipment, instruments, and supplies for sorting and decontamination.
- Manually clean supplies of contaminants, remove waste matter, and operate decontamination equipment.
- Examine supplies meticulously to ensure they are properly cleaned and sanitized.
- Sterilization and Packaging:
- Prepare and pack decontaminated supplies for sterilization.
- Monitor and operate sterilization equipment to ensure proper functioning and adherence to safety protocols.
- Sterilize, prepare, wrap, and organize equipment into instrument trays for use during medical procedures.
- Equipment and Inventory Management:
- Prepare and deliver all necessary equipment and instruments for surgeries, examinations, medical procedures, and medical carts.
- Maintain records of sterilization procedures, sterilized items, equipment maintenance, and supplies.
- Control inventory levels, reorder supplies, and check expiration dates to ensure availability of necessary tools and compliance with safety standards.
- Quality Control:
- Test sterilization equipment regularly and report any issues or problems with the equipment to the appropriate personnel.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience in sterile processing, healthcare, or related field is preferred.
- Knowledge of sterilization procedures and infection control standards.
- Ability to operate sterilization equipment and follow safety protocols.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure all equipment and instruments are properly sanitized and functional.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in Sterile Processing (e.g., CBSPD, IAHCSMM) preferred but not required.
- Experience working in a hospital or medical facility is preferred.
Certifications:
- Sterile Processing certification (preferred, but not required at hire).
- CPR and First Aid certification (preferred).
