ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
The mission of Gene Slay’s Girls & Boys Club (GSGBC) is to empower girls and boys in the St. Louis metropolitan area, especially those who need us most, to realize their physical, intellectual, and emotional potential.
Since 2018, GSGBC has embraced trauma-informed care in its operations and service delivery to members and their families. Drawing from models like the Sanctuary Model, Missouri Model, and Conscious Discipline, the organization integrates trauma-informed principles into its culture and practices. Staff receive training to understand the impacts of trauma and effectively address related behaviors. The Conscious Discipline Model emphasizes safety, connection, and problem-solving, enhancing support for children’s emotional and behavioral needs. GSGBC is committed to fostering a supportive, empowering environment where members and families can thrive.
GSGBC offers afterschool and summer programming for youth ages 6-16, serving more than 700 youth annually. GSGBC supports youth development and holistic health with programs that include Academics, Athletics, Character Building, Healthy Living, College & Career Readiness and The Arts.
SCHEDULE & LOCATION:
This is a temporary, seasonal position during Summer Camp which is offered June 9th through August 1st, Swim Instructors typically work 9:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday through Thursday. Summer staff will report for training May 29th – June 6th. This position is located at our Soulard Campus (2524 S. 11th St., 63104).
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
· Instructs members on water safety and proper swim techniques utilizing prepared lesson plans
· Works collaboratively with licensed lifeguards to ensure pool safety and guidelines are met
· Evaluates members’ progress
· Completes required paperwork in a timely manner
· Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
· Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency and non-emergency situations
· Provides a welcoming environment for all members
· Develops positive relationships with participants and provides motivational support and guidance
· Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner
· Maintains accurate records as required by GSGBC and/or the City of St. Louis Health Department
· Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
· Documents any incidents and/or injuries and completes incident reports as required
· Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
· Attends and participates in required trainings and meetings
· Assists in maintaining/organizing pool deck and surrounding areas as designated
· Performs other duties as assigned

· Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift people in distress of varying weights
· Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing or walking for various lengths of time
· The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
· The employee must endure extreme temperature conditions – up to 95 degrees with 100% humidity
· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust
· Ability to get in and out of the pool as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Must be a certified water safety instructor (American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, YMCA Aquatics Certification, etc.) with at least 1 year of experience
· Must be at least 16 years of age
· Certified in CPR by a nationally recognized organization, such as the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or an equivalent certification, including an in-person skills assessment, and be approved by the Department of Health and Senior Services
· Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
· The ability to solve problems and process through critical thinking
· Must pass the health and employment requirements set by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a condition of employment, including fingerprints, background check, physical and drug screen
