We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Legislative Affairs to join our Energy Group located in Washington D.C.

The Energy Group has unparalleled private sector expertise in both Magnetic Fusion Energy and Inertial Confinement Fusion.

The Energy Group has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Director of Legislative Affairs to support its world-leading work in nuclear fusion research and technology. This position will report to the Senior Vice-President of the Energy Group and will work closely with several Divisions within the Energy Group - Strategic Development Division, Magnetic Fusion Energy (MFE) Division and Inertial Fusion Technologies (IFT) Division. The person filling this role will be required to register as a federal lobbyist and will work from our Washington, D.C. office.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Represents the GA Energy Group on policy, funding, and technical matters with members of the Executive and Legislative Branches of Government.
  • Leads the development and implementation of short and long-term government affairs engagement for the GA Energy Group and consults senior leaders to implement current, annual, and long-term business development and objectives for the organization.
  • Provides guidance in developing and implementing new and revised strategic objectives
  • Acts as a liaison with other General Atomics & Affiliated Companies, associations, federal, state, and local organizations.
  • Ensures the policy and regulatory environment supports the company's priorities.
  • Coordinates with designated groups on political, legislative and regulatory issues of importance to the company.
  • Manages, shapes, and influences policy and regulatory affairs and leads legislative affairs activities to ensure business and financial objectives are attained.
  • Assists in representing the company to the executive/legislative branch to advance company priorities; educates USG regulatory and policy personnel about company capabilities, pursuits, and priorities.
  • Provides leadership and strategic guidance to senior leadership and colleagues on potential opportunities and the interaction with executive/legislative branch policies, initiatives and procedures.
  • Supports the development of policies and strategies to achieve them while remaining consistent with established goals and metrics.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Bachelors or Masters in business administration or a related field and fifteen or more years of progressively complex experience in business development with at least eleven years managing business development activities with Government regulators and officials. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Must demonstrate a detailed and extensive expertise and application of policy, legislative and regulatory principles and concepts, and practice.
  • Must demonstrated project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.
  • Experience with the Congressional appropriations process, national energy policy, and/or national defense policy is strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment. Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE ‘Q’ clearance is desired.


Job Type: Full-Time Salary

Salary range: 194,890 - 362,928
