Job Description

This Engineer will work within the BIW Engineering Department’s Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) organization as a member of the Reliability, Maintainability & Availability (RMA) team. This Engineer will leverage their specialty reliability and maintainability (R&M) skills to effectively implement R&M requirements onboard U.S. Navy Ships for Hull, Mechanical & Electrical (HM&E) systems.  

Typical skills and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide Failure Reporting Analysis & Corrective Action (FRACAS) expertise to the Zumwalt Class Ship Program, including during fleet deployment and build-yard maintenance periods (BYMP). Perform engineering tasks to effectively document HM&E equipment failures, participate in Failure Review Boards (FRBs) and generate reliability metrics, including reliability growth calculations.
  • Determine root cause of equipment failures and document solutions (long term corrective action) to prevent failure recurrence.
  • Participate in integrated product teams involving buyers, subcontractors, vendors, engineers, logistic reps, Navy customers, etc. for current and future BIW shipbuilding programs, including DDG(X).
  • Model ship system designs, conduct analyses/calculations and perform research to determine equipment R&M performance parameters (MTBF, MTBF, MTTR, Rm, Ao, etc.) Apply reliability techniques and software to perform sensitivity studies, supportability calculations, and optimal sparing.
  • Interpret engineering designs, drawings, change proposals, plus Ship and Purchase Specifications.
  • Gather equipment specification data as well as industry/fleet failure data. Organize and interpret data for R&M evaluations and technical assessments.
  • Interface with vendors to achieve R&M requirements identified in HM&E equipment Purchase Specifications and/or Ship Design-Build Specifications.
  • Support development of Maintenance Demonstration (M-Demo) Plans. Participate in the subsequent execution of M-Demo events. Produce M-Demo reports for government review and approval.
  • Review vendor-initiated Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analyses (FMECA) of shipboard systems. Submit FMECA Reports to government for review and facilitate Navy CDRL approval.
  • Review vendor-initiated Reliability and Maintainability Allocations, Assessments and Analyses (RMAAA) for shipboard equipment. Submit RMAAA Reports to government for review and facilitate Navy CDRL approval.
  • Interface with Navy customer, Manufacturing Trades, Procurement, Quality Assurance, Fleet Service Engineering, and/or Design to resolve technical issues, failure investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Update internal R&M procedures and work instructions to facilitate repeatability and promote continuous process improvement. 

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering required.
  • Reliability Engineering education and/or training highly preferred.
  • Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) training and CRE certification very highly preferred.

Required/Preferred Experience

Sr. Engineer - 5 years' experience required

Principal Engineer - 12 years' experience required

 

  • Strong knowledge of Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering principles required.
  • Knowledge of naval ship systems highly preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Strong research skills and attention to detail required, data analysis skills highly preferred.
  • Positive attitude toward teaming environment; cohesive team membership required.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute projects independently, and as a team member, is required.
  • Familiarly with reliability theory and/or reliability modeling software highly preferred.
  • Salary range commensurate with experience.
