Department 705 On-site Engineering is an integral part of Electric Boat's Overhaul and Repair and Maintenance and Modernization businesses. With these businesses, Electric Boat provides mission-ready submarines to the fleet through overhaul, repair, maintenance, modernization, alterations and improvements. D705 engineers provide non-nuclear deck-plate engineering support for maintenance and alteration activities on submarines at Bangor, WA and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, including the planning, execution, and certification of work. D705 routinely develops technical work documents, provides technical direction and oversight, and evaluates shipboard conditions.
A multi-discipline group comprised of mechanical, structural, and electrical engineers, D705 Engineering operates in a collaborative, dynamic, team-oriented manner. Using a design-build approach, D705 interfaces with Operations, Design, Planning Yard, Test, and Program Office personnel in order to arrive at innovative solutions to difficult problems. Additionally, interaction with the United States Navy customer is typical, including the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Naval Sea Systems Command, and submarine crews.
D705 Engineering provides deck-plate support on submarine overhaul work. Strong written and verbal communication skills are utilized and fostered using a hands-on, proactive, deadline-driven engineering approach. Awareness and understanding of military specifications, submarine shipbuilding specifications and design criteria, US Navy maintenance/overhaul requirements, and special emphasis programs are developed through mentoring and training. As D705 engineers solve problems on the ship as well as in the office, effective use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety regulations are necessary.
D705 electrical engineers are responsible for providing technical direction and oversight, and resolving shipboard problems associated with the following:

- Submarine non-propulsion electronic systems (NPES), including fire control, navigation, sonar, strain gage instrumentation etc.
- Submarine hull, mechanical, and electrical (HM&E) systems, including control, indication, power distribution, interior communications, fiber-optic data distribution, electromechanical actuation, etc.
Tasks required of the D705 electrical engineer include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Planning of submarine maintenance and modernization work. This includes the development of work breakdown structures and the authoring of technical work documents.
- Interpretation and translation of shipbuilding specifications, maintenance requirements, and contractual requirements.
- Deck-plate support and resolution of emergent issues.
- Development of technical rationale to support approval of nonconforming conditions.
- Collaboration with engineers of other disciplines, including mechanical and structural.
- Support design work of Industrial Plant Equipment for submarine maintenance facilities

Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in electrical, computer, or systems engineering
- 4 years of relevant experience
- Active DoD secret or Top Secret security clearance
Preferred:
- Prior experience related to USN ship maintenance and/or modernization
Skills
- A strong foundational understanding of electrical engineering concepts, including the relationship between electrical systems/components and interfacing non-electrical constructs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- An aptitude for problem resolution and facing new challenges.
- The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
