Summary

General Excavating is searching for a highly motivated and experienced Lowboy Driver. The driver is responsible for safely and efficiently operating lowboy tractor trailers transporting large and heavy construction equipment to various construction sites throughout the state of Nebraska.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Works with foreman, mechanics, and other operations staff to coordinate heavy equipment relocations from various job sites or General Excavating's equipment yard to optimize fleet utilization and project deliveries.
  • Ensures proper and safe loading, unloading, and securing of oversized/overweight equipment to avoid shifting, loosening, or falling during transport. Must have the ability to tarp, chain, or strap loads using appropriate securement and binding for the haul.
  • Plans the best route for delivery of heavy equipment, taking into consideration height, weight, and width restrictions.
  • Completes thorough load check inspections before each departure, ensuring that loads are secured and truck is in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Identifies and addresses potential delivery and pick-up problems and alerts relevant parties to avoid delays and maximize efficiency.
  • Use basic equipment operating skills necessary to load and unload oversized/overweight parts, equipment, or materials.
  • Ensures all necessary permits and logs related to the truck, trailer or shipment are up-to-date and readily available for DOT inspections.
  • Documents machine/equipment damage and reports immediately.
  • Complies with all DOT, State and local traffic and highway laws, rules and regulations to haul large loads in compliance with legal weight and load size limits.
  • Completes and files all vehicle pre/post-trip inspections and log items as required by government agencies and General Excavating in a precise and timely manner.
  • Checks fluid levels, tires, lights, gas, oil, water, and other controls for safe operation. May perform roadside basic roadside repairs as needed.
Qualifications

Heavy equipment hauling experience required.

Possession and maintenance of a valid Class A CDL and a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) to pass and maintain insurability guidelines.

Ability to pass and maintain DOT/FMCSA requirements in regard to pre/post-employment drug screens and DOT physicals.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Three (3) years minimum related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Valid Class A CDL.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance. Occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock.
