The Project Manager’s role is to engage with customers to identify and interpret their project needs to ensure that the most efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes are utilized in the production of the customer’s product and the project is delivered on time.

The Project Manager’s role is to engage with customers to identify and interpret their project needs to ensure that the most efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes are utilized in the production of the customer’s product. This will require collaborative engineering to develop recommendations to enhance manufacturability. The Project Manager will provide accurate specification interpretations that drive the technical evaluation portion of the sales process. This position requires the individual to maintain contacts with Estimating, Engineering and Operations as well as business and technical representatives of the customer. The Project Manager works with the Sales Manager to evaluate opportunities concerning the probability of a successful conclusion.

The Project Manager must be able to articulate our technology, processes and benefits to both business and technical users. Further, they must be able to identify all the relevant technical issues to ensure complete customer satisfaction through all stages of the sales and manufacturing process. The ability to establish and maintain strong positive relationships throughout the sales cycle is a requirement of this position.

The Project Manager will also have the responsibility to analyze and estimate costs and to continuously update these as the project develops. She/he will prepare accurate, competitive quotes to win purchase orders.

This job description is intended to be an overview of primary responsibilities for this position. All employees are charged with aiding in generally similar duties when management deems it necessary. Special projects and activities may also be created where employees’ talents can best be utilized. In addition, General Sheet Metal Works is a growing organization responding to an ever- changing market. It is expected that tasks and requirements will change from time to time, and employees will be asked to respond as needed and within reason.

Organizational Relationships and Authority

The Project Manager reports directly to the Sales Manager. There are no direct reports for this position.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Project Manager is to identify and interpret customer needs and provide a solution that may entail the purchase of new equipment, developing a new process or designing a new tool to meet those needs. This Manager drives a project from cradle to grave and delivers the most efficient and cost-effective engineering solution for the customer’s product. This Manager has a goal of winning the purchase orders, making a manufacturable product at the desired margin and delivering it on time. This Manager develops long-term customer relationships by executing well.


Additional responsibilities include:

  • Accountability for evaluation of projects and RFQ’s to determine whether the requirements are a fit to our capabilities or constitute an exception that must be further analyzed by the Manufacturing Engineers and/or AQP Technologists
  • Collaborating with the Sales Manager to address requests that may be exceptional to our current fabricating capabilities
  • Ability to draw CAD models from print, sketch and concept using SolidWorks
  • Collaborate with customer’s engineering personnel to refine, enhance or create new designs
  • Estimating processes accurately development of quotes for customer projects
  • Sourcing unusual materials
  • Setting up jobs with complete information and specification of tasks needed to be performed by manufacturing
  • Visits customer sites to get clarification on projects and to understand upcoming customer needs
  • Seeks to understand reasons for unsuccessful projects to suggest enhancements and improvements to the sales and engineering process
  • Works closely with Manufacturing Engineers to gain understanding of manufacturing capabilities in order to better evaluate opportunities and quote realistically
  • Collaborate with remote plant personnel when those facilities are to be used to support a customer project

Qualifications and Competencies

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess excellent ability for attention to detail. Success in this position requires the ability to understand customer needs in depth and evaluate requirements relative to GSM’s manufacturing capabilities. The Project Manager maintains an optimistic and supportive attitude towards customers and colleagues and maintains the strictest confidence regarding all issues and information relative to the company’s operations, its employee, financial matters, and personal matters of which the employee may become aware in the course of their work.


The individual will also maintain competency with the following programs and equipment:

  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • Office telephone system
  • Corporate ERP System
  • SolidWorks and Pro/E
  • Corporate nesting software

  • Manufacturing/Engineering Aptitude: Strong ability to understand engineering drawings and match with manufacturing processes; GD&T
  • Required to deliver quotes in an accurate and timely manner with attention to detail. deliver quotes with accurate price, delivery, quality and packaging commitments
  • Attendance/Punctuality: Is consistently at work and on time; ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent; arrives at meetings and appointments prepared and on time
  • Dependability: Follows procedures and responds to management direction takes responsibility for own actions; keeps commitments; commits time necessary to reach goals; meets deadlines or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan

Education

  • Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s Degree (preferred)
  • Certification in SolidWorks or equivalent
  • Project Management certification (preferred)

Experience

Minimum of 2 years of experience estimating metal fabrication, stamping and/or welding solutions preferred. Project Management experience.

  • Able to type at a keyboard without bodily or psychological discomfort most of the working day
  • Ability to ambulate around the office environment and manufacturing floor comfortably to fulfill tasks required in various offices and departments
  • Ability to drive and fly for an extended period in private or commercial aircraft
