What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Service Technician position at Generator Supercenter of the Mainline?
Generator Supercenter of the Mainline is looking for two skilled and experienced Generator Technicians with a strong background in automotive or diesel engine repair, highlighting how these mechanical and diagnostic skills translate seamlessly into servicing whole-home generators. If you’ve worked on automotive engines, you’ll find the mechanical systems of Generac generators highly analogous—both involve precise control over complex machinery with an emphasis on performance and reliability.
The Generator Technician will focus on the service and repair of Generac whole-home generators, including Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), Smart Management Modules (SMM), and whole-home surge protectors. The role requires expertise in mechanical servicing and control panel replacement, without the need for extensive electrical troubleshooting outside the control panel. We are looking for one junior technician to focus on the service aspect of the generator service and a senior technician to focus on repairs and more complex troubleshooting.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Generator Service & Repair:
- Perform routine generator maintenance tasks similar to automotive engine servicing, including oil changes, filter replacements, and detailed generator inspections.
- Leverage your experience in automotive or diesel engines to lead the service, repair, and maintenance of Generac air-cooled and liquid-cooled whole-home generators.
- Specialize in control panel replacements and associated components. No need for electrical troubleshooting beyond the control panel, keeping the focus on mechanical repairs.
2. Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all safety standards for handling and servicing generator equipment, paralleling the safety protocols used in automotive and engine repair work.
- Ensure all mechanical and control panel servicing adheres to company and industry guidelines.
3. Collaboration & Customer Service:
- Partner with sales and service teams to ensure customer satisfaction, just as you would ensure a client’s car or truck is operating smoothly after repair.
- Work with other team members to solve customer problems cost effectively and in a timely manner.
- Clearly explain to customers the work performed, focusing on control panel replacements and system servicing, without needing to go into advanced electrical details.
4. Training & Development:
- Complete required training during the first 30 days, including Generac certification classes.
- Obtain Generac Level 1 certification within 30 days of employment, advancing skills that directly build on your automotive and engine repair knowledge.
- Aim for Generac Level 2 certification within 6-16 months, deepening your expertise in generator technology.
5. Team Integration:
- Collaborate with both local and remote team members to ensure smooth service operations, drawing on the teamwork skills often used in the automotive repair shop environment.
- Taking the time to understand the skill sets of the technical team members and establishing a rapport with them to ensure you can rely on them in the field.
6. Documentation & Reporting:
- Keep detailed records of parts used, time spent, and service performed, just as you would for automotive diagnostics and repairs.
- Provide feedback to the Service Delivery Manager on equipment status and customer satisfaction.
Hours of Availability:
- Working hours: Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday appointments.
- Working hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Must be available for on-call rotations as needed.
Wage:
- Starting at $18/$40 per hour, depending on experience and certifications.
- Generac certification bonuses upon successful completion of levels 1 and 2.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- For Junior Technician Position: Minimum of 3 years of experience in automotive repair (gasoline or diesel engines) or related fields, with a focus on automotive maintenance, diagnostics and light repair.
- For Senior Technician Position: Minimum of 3 years of experience in automotive repair (gasoline or diesel engines) or related fields, with a focus on mechanical diagnostics and repair.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to commute to King of Prussia, PA.
- Strong ability to adapt automotive engine skills to the mechanical components of generator systems.
- Ability to complete Generac Level 1 certification within the first 30 days.
Preferred:
- Experience with diesel engines, as this directly correlates with the liquid-cooled Generac systems.
- Previous work in an electrician apprentice role is beneficial but not required.
- Willingness to pursue Generac Level 2 certification within 6-16 months.
Application Process:
Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting their resume and a brief cover letter detailing their relevant experience to mainline@generatorsupercenter.com.
