Position Details
Job Title : Steel Band Director
Job Summary :
The Steel Band Director oversees the steel band program and student participation. The Steel Band Director is responsible for leading, organizing, and directing the steel band ensemble during in and out of school events. The Steel Band Director fosters a positive and collaborative atmosphere within the ensemble, encouraging teamwork and mutual respect among students.
Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to) :
1. Select appropriate repertoire for the steel band ensemble, considering the skill level and interests of the students.
2. Lead rehearsals effectively, providing guidance on technique, interpretation, and ensemble cohesion.
3. Arrange or adapt music to suit the instrumentation and capabilities of the ensemble.
4. Provide individualized instruction to ensemble students to address specific areas of improvement.
5. Offer guidance on music theory concepts relevant to the repertoire being performed.
6. Plan and organize performances, including concerts, recitals, competitions, and community events.
7. Coordinate logistics such as venue booking, equipment setup, and transportation for performances.
8. Conduct regular assessments of ensemble performance and progress, identifying areas for refinement and growth.
9. Arrange opportunities for afterschool practices to prepare for musical events
10. Coordinate after school musical event opportunities for students in the community and surrounding areas.
11. Stay informed about developments in the field of steelpan music education and seek opportunities for professional development.
12. Recruit new students through auditions or outreach efforts to maintain ensemble enrollment and vitality.

Other Duties :
1. Performs other duties as assigned
2. Performs routine tasks necessary to facilitate the responsibilities in the assigned area.
Qualifications : Education :
Bachelor’s degree required. Valid Michigan teacher certificate in secondary education
required. Must meet requirements for highly qualified teacher as specified in No Child Left
Behind. Master’s degree in content area preferred.

Demonstrates ability to verbally give clear, concise and accurate directions with authority when necessary. Ability to focus on individual and group needs and help them reach these needs. Ability to utilize district technology and work to maintain proficiency, as skill sets change with technology and / or the needs of the district. Ability to solve problems logically and effectively, to work independently, to manage multiple tasks and demonstrate effective time management skills. Excellent oral, written, electronic and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work a flexible workday and work week. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position. Demonstrated mental / physical ability and stamina for meeting the essential duties of the position. Discretion with confidential information. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to maintain a calm, poised and professional image at all times. Ability to maintain positive working relationships with team members. Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with board policies and established administrative guidelines.
