General Job Description - Track Worker - Maintenance of Way
***Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years experience in heavy construction (including use of construction equipment) and/or railroad maintenance of way/track maintenance experience.*** Higher base pay (hourly incentive of $1.50/hour) for those with CDL (Commercial Driver's License) who maintain this and regularly drive/operate commercial vehicles as part of their position with the company. Pay is determined based on skills and experience, with hourly rate progressing as skills are developed and applied.
The Track Worker - Maintenance of Way - completes a mix of track maintenance/construction activities to existing track, installs/removes ties, rail, and/or bridge timbers. Must be able to complete work manually with hand tools, including with or without the use of specialized track equipment. Job is physically challenging with heavy lifting and involves walking on uneven ballast/surfaces, including in adverse weather conditions. Working safely is our most important priority, no matter what we do or when we do it. Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently is essential.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lifting/moving railroad materials (ties, rails, kegs of spikes, etc.), shoveling ballast, clearing away snow and ice.
- Replace rail, ties, ballast, timbers.
- Properly and safely demonstrate the proper use of tools and track equipment/machinery.
- Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration.
- Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone.
- Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and safety notices.
- Provide accurate information (daily paperwork) of locations and times while being the SPP.
- Be vigilant in your duties against unauthorized use of railroad property.
- Provide your own transportation to the job site.
- Provide protection were directed by your supervisor while contractors work on or near railroad property.
- Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety.
- Keep company vehicles and equipment authorized for your use, clean and free from trash.
- Notify your supervisor of broken or damaged equipment, tools, vehicles ASAP
- Respect company property, buildings, equipment and vehicles
- Notify the train dispatcher upon your arrival and departure from flag (SPP) job location
- Show up on time, be well rested and ready to work.
- While representing this company, speaking with customers, and interacting with other employees YOU MUST practice proper hygiene.
- Remove tripping hazards from railroad and/or notify supervisor.
- Assist in re-railing of cars/locomotives.
- Additional duties assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
- Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.
- Complete annual training and pass safety operating rules examinations.
- Troubleshoot work-related problems.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to get to work.
- Understand oral and written communications (both general and technical).
- Problem solve, make decisions and provide instructions when required.
- Quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to visual symbols, signals and displays (sound, light, picture, etc.).
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection.
- Must be physically fit, able to work long hours.
- Must be able to respond quickly to work order changes.
- Must be able to take control and act quickly under pressure.
- Basic knowledge of hand tools.
- Will be required to assist in other departments, if needed.
- Preferential qualification includes attaining and/or maintaining a current CDL (commercial driver's license) - the company compensates and incentivizes those who obtain and maintain a CDL.
- Preferential experience includes operation of construction/heavy equipment (backhoe, skid steer, bulldozer, compact excavator, and/or similar machinery).
- Ability and openness to learn operation of specialized equipment/machinery used in the railroad industry for track maintenance.
- Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, which includes a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
- Employees in this position are subject to random alcohol and drug testing as per the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Guidelines. Our policy is ZERO TOLERANCE. We maintain a drug-free workplace and perform pre-employment substance abuse testing as well as random testing. Working Conditions
- Wear protective equipment including hearing protection, work boots, safety glasses and hard hat.
- Heavy labor, outside type work in adverse weather (cold, heat, snow, sleet, and rain)
- Standard work week is Mon-Fri 7am-3pm. Work hours can vary, based on need. Available to work over-time when necessary.
- Walk long distances over uneven terrain.
- Reach/handle/feel/stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl.
- Medium to heavy lifting regularly.
- Working areas can be noisy, dirty and may have tight quarters.
