Information Security Specialist Contract: 12-18 months
Location: Austin, Texas (5 days onsite) *NO EXCEPTION
We are seeking an experienced Information Security Specialist to join our team to plan, implement, and monitor security measures for information systems and infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of security frameworks, especially the NIST Risk Management Framework, and will be capable of working independently with minimal supervision while exercising extensive judgment to safeguard computer systems and data.

Minimum Qualifications:
- 5 years of experience in information security management.
- Strong experience working with GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of common information security frameworks, including:
- NIST Risk Management and Cybersecurity Framework
- Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS)
- Information Security Standards
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in an ISSO or similar assessor-type role within federal agencies.
- CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification or equivalent.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to apply independent judgment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to explain NIST controls and security content in an easily understandable format.
- Ability to write clear and detailed security reports. Must have experience delivering written findings and advising clients on security controls and vulnerabilities.
- Public and customer-facing skills, with experience in interacting directly with stakeholders to present findings and solutions.
- Knowledge of and experience with mature security frameworks, vulnerability reassessment, and documentation of security risks and remediation actions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct security assessments and reviews of account permissions, data access needs, security violations, and programming changes.
- Support the implementation of computer system security plans in collaboration with internal teams and external vendors.
- Develop strategies to protect computer configurations and data files against unauthorized modifications, destruction, or disclosure while ensuring emergency data processing needs are met.
- Monitor and maintain systems and procedures designed to protect data systems and databases from unauthorized access.
- Research and develop systems and procedures to prevent, detect, contain, and correct data security breaches.
- Assist in the design and deployment of security applications and infrastructure.
- Develop and support IT disaster recovery and business continuity planning efforts.
- Write security reports that summarize findings, document vulnerabilities, and advise customers on improvements needed.
