Summary
The Director of Operations is responsible for leading, inspiring and motivating the production, shipping and maintenance teams for our metal fabrication business. They model and support our company culture and values, develops valued career paths for our employees and ensures the operation functions in a safe, quality focused manner to provide on-time delivery to our valued partners in the most cost-efficient, Lean manner. The Director of Operations works alongside Purchasing, Engineering and Quality to support Customer Service, Estimating and Sales in accurately and quickly responding to our customers. They passionately support manufacturing, the concept of making stuff is “COOL,” employee development and STEM education within GenMet and the broader community.
Duties and responsibilities
- Lead, model and promote a culture of honesty, integrity, teamwork, responsibility, adaptability and continuous learning and improvement.
- Lead, support, develop, hire, on-board and evaluate production, shipping and maintenance leads and Operations team members. Drive the team to meet or exceed customer expectations utilizing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely (SMART) goals.
- Hold team members and direct reports accountable for achieving stated goals and supporting the GenMet policies, procedures and culture.
- Deliver formal/informal performance feedback and document annual evaluations with salary recommendations.
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by adhering to established practices and policies (company, federal, state and region), performing regular audits and implementing improvements.
- Adhere to quality standards and processes and recommend revisions for on-going success. Proactively resolve corrective actions, non-conforming products and deviations. Achieve product quality goal of 99% by working in concert with Engineering and Quality teams to “build quality into our process.”
- Meet or exceed 95% On-Time Delivery to customers by managing capacity and ensuring production plans are consistent with achieving acknowledged delivery schedules, while continually striving to reduce lead time.
- Manage and reduce costs through productivity and efficiency improvement and expense management.
- Maintain inventory accuracy, ensure team reports material use for job costing and inventory replenishment.
- Review Operation’s Team time reporting accuracy, job efficiency metrics, and Indirect time utilization.
- Encourage “Yellow Sheet” or continuous improvement submittals by team and support completion.
- Implement continuous improvement methodologies – LEAN, 5S, Six Sigma, etc.
- Drive new capital equipment, new tooling, replacement equipment and tooling and maintenance activities.
- Support compliance with ISO9001, ITAR, OSHA, DNR and other applicable industry standards.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in supply chain, engineering or business preferred. 2 year degree in related field required.
- Minimum of 3 years management experience and 5 years manufacturing experience

- Effectively communicates externally and internally to gather information, ask questions, develop alternatives, make recommendations, explain decisions and pursue actions to ensure goals and expectations are understood by our team
- Success using quality and continuous improvement methodologies to track, analyze, report and improve results
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) experience, JobBOSS ERP experience preferred
- Well organized, attention to detail and self-directed to complete tasks in a timely manner
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Solidworks and databases
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to safely and successfully perform the job functions
- Must be able to travel locally 5-10% of the time
- Must be able to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally life up to 25 Lbs.
