Teacher Aide Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
· High School Diploma or equivalent (copy required upon initial hire date)
· Valid New York State Driver’s License (copy required upon initial hire date)
· Physical (required within 1 month after initial hire date)
· State Education Department Fingerprint Clearance
Preferred: BS or AAS degree in related field, previous experience
Hours: 38.75 hours/week, Monday - Friday, 7:45am - 3:30pm Must be flexible to meet the needs of the program. This is a ten-month position (September - June)
Supervised by: Behavioral Instruction Specialist
Objectives of Position:
· To help create and maintain a safe, healthful and therapeutic environment for all children in our care
· To help implement each child's individual education plan under guidance from the classroom teacher
· To provide positive role models for children attending school at The George Junior Republic Union Free School District
· To ensure that the basic psychological needs of the children for nurturing, structure, guidance and counseling are met
Responsibilities of the Position:
· Be present and punctual on assigned work day
· Know the whereabouts of children assigned to your classroom at all times. Report missing children to the office immediately
· Act as a positive role model for the children by engaging in activities productively and in support of accepted societal norms and values
· Guide and assist children in the following areas:
o Use of appropriate language and topics of conversation
o Use of appropriate table manners
o Maintenance of clean and neat classroom and school environment
o Constructive use of time between activities
o Appropriate social conduct and interaction with peers and adults
· Help children develop trusting relationships by actively engaging in activities with them and by expression of caring through role modeling, life space interviews, and use of appropriate constructive consequences
· Be where children are, walk with them to and from meals, to physical education, and other activities, so as to provide support
· Escort students to all appointments, meals, etc. No student may leave the school building unescorted, regardless of their campus level
· Supervise children's manners and behavior at breakfast and lunch at Ewald Dining Center
· Participate with children in all scheduled activities, i.e. Physical Education, Art, Computer Lab, etc
· Help children with their daily assignments, in support of your classroom teacher
· Prepare daily log, discipline referrals, or significant incident reports as required
· Help children abide by all classroom rules, school policies and procedures and all The George Junior Republic UFSD policies and procedures
· Appropriate use of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention techniques, including physical restraint as trained, when necessary
· Perform other duties as assigned
· Adhere to all rules, regulations, policies and philosophies of The George Junior Republic UFSD
Responsibility of Teacher’s Aide to Teacher:
· You are to take guidance and direction from your teacher, both academic and behavioral
· Your teacher will assign academic duties which are appropriate. These may include:
o Photocopying
o Grading of objective assignments
o Recording grades
o Obtain information from IEP file
o Your assistance with instruction
· The teacher will implement the behavior modification plan which is to be used in the classroom. They will also direct the need for resolution. (How long a child remains outside the classroom environment after intervention.)
· Aides are responsible to let their teacher know where they are at all times.
· When you are scheduled to prepare with your teacher, the teacher will instruct the time. (This is not automatically break time for you.)
· When your teacher is absent and no substitute is provided you will execute the lesson plans provided.
· You are responsible to your teacher from 2:30 to 3:00. If your teacher has no assignment for you at this time you will report to the Behavioral Instruction Specialist
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $21.00 - $24.00 per hour
