POSITION TITLE: Teacher, Special Education (Certified)
OBJECTIVE:
Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. This position will be participating in activities beyond the school day, such as faculty meetings, campus event nights, before school or after-school tutorials, etc.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Collaborate with students, parents, and other staff members to develop an IEP for each student assigned through the ARD Committee process.
- Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of the students assigned.
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify the regular curriculum as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
- Participate in ARD Committee meetings regularly.
- Assess student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP.
- Employ various instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
- Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
- Use technology in the teaching/learning Participate in staff development activities to improve job related skills.
- Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
- Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Tutor students on an individual basis.

STUDENT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT:
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
- Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned.
- Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION:
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students' physical, social, and emotional development.
- Manage student behavior and administer This includes intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary, according to IEP.
- Consult with classroom teachers regarding managing student behavior according to IEP.
- Consult district and outside resource people regarding students' education, social, medical, and personal needs.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
PROFESSIONALISM:
- To be punctual and be available during official working hours.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
- Required: Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments.
- Minimum requirements of four years in an instructional role or equivalent (including Internship).
