College Counseling Associate

George Walton Academy (GWA) provides challenging instruction, engaging experiences, and global perspectives designed to inspire lives of intellectual curiosity, integrity, and purpose. GWA is an independent, Pre-K-12, independent, college-preparatory school located on 61 beautiful acres in Monroe, Georgia, less than one hour from the state capitol of Atlanta.

George Walton Academy seeks a College Counseling Associate for the 2025-2026 school year. Reporting to the Director of College Counseling, the Associate will work closely with the Upper School Division Head and the Counseling Department, with an emphasis on collaborating with colleagues to set our students up for success.

Position Overview

The College Counseling Associate reports to the Director of College Counseling and works closely with students and families to provide guidance throughout upper school in preparation for the college application and selection process. This role supports students in exploring educational opportunities aligned with their academic achievements, career goals, and personal interests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meet individually with students to discuss upper school course selections, college options, and application strategies
  • Help students identify colleges that match their academic profile, interests, and career goals
  • Work closely with the Director of the Writing Center to guide students through application procedures, including essay writing, resume development, and interview preparation
  • Organize and conduct informational workshops for students and parents
  • Maintain current knowledge of college admission requirements, financial aid processes, and scholarship opportunities
  • Track application deadlines and help students manage timelines
  • Collaborate with school counselors and teachers for recommendation letters and academic planning
  • Assist with coordinating college representative visits and college fairs
  • Maintain detailed records of student interactions and application status
  • Communicate with the Director of College Counseling and Director of the PARC to order and register students for standardized testing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in counseling, education, or related field preferred
  • 1-3 years of experience in college counseling, admissions, or related educational field
  • Excellent knowledge of colleges, admission requirements, and financial aid processes
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to connect with and motivate diverse student populations
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational skills
  • Proficiency with college planning software and database management
  • Exceptional candidates will have 2 or more years experience in college admissions counseling
  • Skills & Attributes

  • Technologically capable of interfacing with the school's SIS to retrieve student records and reports
  • Proficient in college application platforms and other web based college counseling services
  • Empathetic listener who builds rapport with students and families
  • Patient and encouraging approach to working with students
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to ethical counseling practices and student confidentiality
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness of diverse student needs
