Requirements

The supports all students, non-students, and permanent residents in the communities surrounding Georgetown University. Our office will educate students about university policies and local ordinances; continue to build and strengthen neighborhood relations by facilitating dialogue; and promote civic citizenship to create a positive quality of life for everyone living in the neighborhood.

The Assistant Director - a full-time professional staff member within the Office Neighborhood Life - demonstrates a thorough understanding of and commitment to building town gown relationships as well as the education and character development of college students. Primary responsibilities include :

Oversee department programmatic efforts and orientations for students on and off campus as it relates to living in the surrounding neighborhoods, implementing the University trash monitoring program and operationalizing the Student Neighborhood Assistance Program (SNAP).

Attend meetings in the evenings and on occasional weekends and walks the neighborhood at times.

Assist with physical labor when heeded, including the annual move in / move out drives and the occasional neighborhood cleanup.

Be available throughout the academic year to occasionally participate on SNAP, which operates from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Director of Neighborhood Life, the Assistant Director and has a close day-to-day relationship with the Director and with the Community Directors; and supervises up to two student workers. The general working condition is an office environment

The Assistant Director interacts with students :

To educate through mandatory orientation sessions during the academic year

To advise regarding issues and resources relevant to living off-campus

The Assistant Director interacts with various University officials, including :

The Assistant Director(s) for Student Conduct regarding judicial actions for students residing off-campus

University Counsel regarding compliance with the various District orders, including the Campus Plan and DC Zoning Order

The Director of Residential Education regarding off-campus issues of shared concern, including off-campus behavior of the students residing on-campus

The Director of Facilities management regarding bulk trash disposal off campus and general issues in the neighborhood

The Assistant Director interacts with community officials by :

Meeting regularly with the Department of Public Works to plan for the beginning and ending of the academic year and the associated trash / donations that come with students moving in / out.

Meeting regularly with the Office of the Tenant Advocate to better understand landlord / tenant laws to better serve the University community.

Requirements and Qualifications

Master’s degree in higher education or student affairs administration, counseling, or related field

2 to 4 years of post-graduate experience in higher education student advising and / or student programming - for off-campus student advising / programming experience

Mediation experience to monitor, adjust, and reset (when appropriate) expectations of neighbors and students

Clear communication skills - with students and neighbors regarding expectations and University obligations, and to define, explain, and defend those expectations and obligations

Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ability to take initiative and to work in a supportive and collaborative way with students, colleagues, community members and city officials

Ability to work efficiently, attend to details, and follow through with assigned projects or tasks

Ability to build strong relationships with colleagues, students, community members and city officials

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with town-gown relations or government related experience

Knowledge of higher education practices, student needs, and community partnerships

Pay Range :

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is :

47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
