Job Overview

The Associate Director of Development for the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University (ADOD, SFS) serves as a critical member of the SFS frontline fundraising team. The School of Foreign Service is recognized and respected as one of the foremost higher education institutions for international affairs and the ADOD will be joining Georgetown at a crucial time during its most ambitious capital campaign with a goal of raising $3 billion by 2026.

This Associate Director of Development is embedded within the Office of Advancement and will be responsible for raising philanthropic support from alumni, friends, corporations, foundations. The ADOD will support and partner closely with the SFS Dean, Joel Hellman; key SFS faculty and academic leaders; and SFS Centers, Institutes and Programs to secure the Schools fundraising goal of $300M. The ADOD portfolio and strategy work will preferably be focused on the West Coast, the Midwest, the Northeast Corridor, and the DMV. The ADOD will need to be a strong relationship builder, with a keen eye to long term strategy and philanthropic partnership, independently managing a portfolio of approximately 100-120 high-end annual and major gift relationships for the SFS capable of making gifts largely in the five, six and, at times, seven-figure range.

The ADOD is responsible for meeting key metrics throughout the year to measure performance including an agreed upon number of current and prospective donor visits, proposals / asks made and dollars raised. The role will be asked to raise $500,000-$1M annually.

An important piece of the position, aside from building out a robust portfolio is also managing the fundraising priorities of the Centers, Institutes and Programs (CIPS) within the SFS. The CIPS can provide built-in constituencies with whom to create a pipeline for support and this will require close work with CIP directors and a strategic plan for determining how to prioritize the various CIPS to maximize ROI. This should be in coordination with the SFS Dean to ensure his priorities are being supported and close partnership with the larger SFS and University Development teams.

Travel is involved with this role to meet with prospective and current donors and requires commitment to nights and occasional weekends. The ADOD will occasionally need to staff a principal or faculty member and might need to provide strategic direction to deployment and principal coordination. Event design and execution, volunteer management and a keen eye to communication will all be critical to success in the role, as will collaboration and teamwork across the many internal teams within Advancement, and across the larger university community.

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Senior Director, School of Foreign Service. The ADOD, SFS will partner with Office of Advancement (OA) colleagues, with a heavy emphasis on collaboration with other development officers, including the regional-based Development teams to help with idea generation, planning, and execution of creative cultivation and engagement initiatives associated with the campaign and major gifts enterprise. The ADOD, SFS will also interact with Principals, Faculty, and other key university leaders in efforts aimed at reaching fundraising and engagement goals. Additional duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Develop and implement an effective strategy for attaining specific fundraising goals in the SFS. This includes meeting stated dollar goals, visits, asks, and proposal submissions annually.
  • Build up and manage a portfolio of 120-140 major gift prospective donors and current donors. Prospects will range in giving capacity from $25,000 to $1,000,000 .
  • Conduct 110-130 visits per year to promote campaign priorities with the ultimate goal of building the pipeline of major gift prospects and securing the gifts in the campaign for Georgetown.
  • Make 6-15 asks at level per year.
  • Raise $500,000-$1,000,000 in Major Gifts annually. The focus will shift to the higher-end goal as the portfolio matures and the pipeline grows.
  • Manage relationships with key SFS leaders to create right-sized expectations and to appropriately leverage leaders and volunteers in pursuit of raising support.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three to five years of professional experience, preferably in a development / fundraising environment.
  • Development experience at an academic institution is desirable.
  • A desire to contribute to and participate in the mission of Georgetown University and the Office of Advancement.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Suite and Google Suite.
  • Experience with prospect management systems, donor databases, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems.
  • A solid understanding and experience working with people from international cultures.
  • Ability to adapt their communication style and work style to meet the needs of their constituents.
  • Highly collaborative, with excellent attention to detail, and adept at managing multiple priorities.
  • Possesses professional maturity and can apply tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality in dealing with members of the University community and the University's donors.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills; the ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative as appropriate.

    Pay Range :

    The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is :

    54,616.00 - $100,493.33

    Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
