Requirements
The Access Services Specialist supports the teaching, learning, and research of the Georgetown University community by helping fulfill the University Library’s mission as an agile organization providing preeminent services, collections, and spaces. They are responsible for managing, curating, and communication for Course Reserve materials. This position assists with the scheduling, training, and supervision of 40-60 student library assistants every semester, and is solely responsible for managing and supervising all aspects of departmental policies, procedures, and processes on Sundays. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
- Open the department on Sundays, acting as the primary, only full-time Library employee in the building on that day.
- Solely responsible for managing and supervising all aspects of departmental operations and processes on Sundays, interpreting and applying departmental and library policies and resolving non-routine problems in the absence of the Department Head.
- Report building function issues to GU and Library Facilities, security issues to GUPD, technology issues to Library Information Technologies, and medical issues to GERMS, according to established internal guidelines.
- Work at the Library’s primary service point, which is the first point of contact patrons have with library staff, with a schedule of Sunday to Thursday 9:30 am to 6:00 pm; Assignments will vary to address cyclical and priority needs of the department and work schedule adjusted when the library is closed on a weekend. The work schedule is 9:30 am to 6 pm Sunday through Thursday, and schedules may change according to the needs of the department, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Work Interactions
The position reports directly to the Circulation Desk/Course Reserves Supervisor who reports directly to the Access Services Department Head, along with 9.0 FTE and 1 PTE positions. This position plays a key role in the success of the department by providing support for Resource Sharing, Print Collections, and Equipment Units. The employee must be proficient in the procedures of these services, as well as having a thorough knowledge of the library’s policies and services, and the ability to effectively communicate them to the library users.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree with at least 1 year of related experience
- Demonstrated familiarity with the role of academic libraries meeting the information needs of students, faculty, and staff
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with supervisor, library staff, student employees, and library patrons
- Strong public service orientation
- Computer literate, including ability to learn new software programs and technologies
- Familiarity with Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel
- Familiarity with Google Apps, especially Gmail, Calendar, and Drive
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and push carts weighing over 100 lbs.
- Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, students and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated successful experience working with the public, and supervising employees, particularly students
- Experience with Ex Libris ILS
- Experience with bibliographic databases, spreadsheets, and cloud storage.
- Knowledge of high-quality scanners, Internet resources, and tools.
- Familiarity with reformatting technologies (Adobe Capture, Adobe Acrobat).
- Ability to adjust to periods of increased workflow and varying responsibilities
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a complex, changing environment
- Ability to be diplomatic and negotiate disputes with stakeholders

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$18.28 - $27.33
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
