Job Overview

The Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) is seeking a JD Class of 2025 candidate to serve as a Fellow in the Center's Mitigation Program for one year following graduation. The Mitigation Fellow will advance the Center's work with federal, state, and local governments to establish and implement laws, policies, and practices supporting clean energy and climate mitigation. GCC serves as a resource to federal, state, and local policymakers on complex matters related to transportation, energy, and climate. Our work involves convening senior government officials and conducting research and analysis that informs proactive, collaborative efforts to remove barriers to clean energy and decarbonization, develop low-carbon transportation and industrial solutions, and reduce greenhouse gasses, with a focus on domestic action.

Climate Fellows will have opportunities to engage directly with policymakers and provide research and analysis that supports the development of well-informed, equitable policymaking. GCC works with energy and environment officials across the country, as well as leading academic and policy experts, to reduce emissions in the electric power, transportation, and industrial and commercial sectors. The Mitigation Fellow will work with Climate Center staff to conduct legal and policy analysis related to this work. This will include analyzing relevant judicial rulings and regulatory text, tracking trends and developments of key importance for states (e.g., federal funding bills, electric vehicle charging technologies, changes in energy demands, and impacts of state and federal actions on underserved communities), writing white papers and policy summaries for state officials, and conducting other legal and policy analysis to support the development of equitable and effective policy development

Through our work with government officials, experts, and stakeholders, GCC provides opportunities for engagement with policymakers to discuss new challenges and best practices for achieving more ambitious and equitable climate policy solutions.

Work Interactions

This position will report to our Mitigation Program Director. The Fellow will work with the Associate Director of the Mitigation Program as well as the Senior Associate, Institute Associates, Executive and Faculty Directors, and student research assistants.

Requirements and Qualifications

Applicants should be JD Class of 2025 (graduation date winter 2024 / 25 or spring 2025) students at an ABA-accredited law school and should have strong research, writing, and editing skills as well as a demonstrated interest in climate change, energy, environmental law, or a related field.

We prefer, but do not require, applicants who have prior experience working with state or federal governments or nonprofits, particularly working on climate change, energy, and / or environmental law or policy.

Pay Range

The projected hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is : $55,000 - $60,000. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
