Requirements
The University Police Officer performs law enforcement functions on University property necessary to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, investigation, understanding access control systems, circulation and safety systems, effecting arrests, and emergency response as outlined in General Orders and Special Orders, as directed by superior officers, and as proscribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Training Academy (or equivalent) and other departmental trainings. They support the University community by providing information and assistance. Additional duties include, but are not limited to :
- Accurately and thoroughly prepare incident reports, safeguarding information and evidence to ensure successful follow up and resolution.
- Initiate preliminary investigations of criminal and traffic incidents, conducting traffic enforcement and providing first responder aid when required.
- Support and provide assistance to persons who have been victims of crime.
- Attend court for case review and testimony whenever necessary, regardless of other commitments.
- Conduct crime risk analysis within the campus assigned area, identifying and analyzing recurring community problems while working to identify responses to them.
- Prepare and coordinate tasks to be accomplished within the campus assigned area, answering all telephone calls in the absence of the Communications Officer.
- Respond to emergencies, burglar alarms, fire alarms and requests for service, monitoring all burglar / security alarms, cameras and fire alarms while tracking University Police activities at dispatch.
Work Interactions
The incumbent reports to the Police Sergeant for fulfilling duties assigned, performing patrol functions, and specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in the protection of life and property at Georgetown University. This person works independently with general supervision. The incumbent works with other Police Officers, Communication Officers and Specialists, Security Officers, and Student Guards.
This position is considered essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. This individual must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.
