Position Title:            Temporary Aquarist    

Department:            Aquatic Sustainability

Classification:           Non – Exempt/Part Time 

Direct Report:           Associate Curator, Zoological Operations /Aquatic Sustainability

 

Position Summary:

The Part-time temporary Aquarist will work remotely at Marine Dolphin Adventure, Marineland, FL to ensure care of Georgia Aquarium’s live shark population at that location. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, be team-oriented, motivated, and proficient in all aspects of animal care, water quality, and life support systems. The position will expire on 4/30/2025 but may be extended through a revised position offer if GAI deems it necessary.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs daily system checks and behavioral observations.
  2. Implements the highest quality care for the sand tiger shark collection.
  3. Works with nutrition team to implement, prepare and feed optimal diets.
  4. Participates in animal training and enrichment.
  5. Interprets water chemistries and maintain parameters for aquatic systems.
  6. Provides daily maintenance for shark enclosures.
  7. Assists veterinary staff with medical procedures and quarantine treatments.
  8. Participates in shark transports, if necessary.
  9. Follows safety guidelines for all aspects of operation including dive safety protocols.
  10. Fosters working relationships with other departments and Marineland Dolphin Adventure staff.
  11. Performs other duties as workload necessitates.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Preferred, four-year degree in biology or related field.
  2. Previous work experience with elasmobranchs and life support systems.
  3. A valid State issued driver’s license.
  4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products.
  5. Preferred, knowledge of TRACKS animal management software.

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 100 feet.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  An employee must also have the ability to travel by car, boat and air as needed, physically use SCUBA equipment, conduct field work in the collection and research of animals, and maintain daily contact with a living collection of plants and animals.
