Position Summary:
The youth sports assistant is responsible for oversees/ monitoring Y games, in a way that creates both a controlled environment and a learning environment. The assistant must be knowledgeable of the game in which he/she is overseeing, and able to relay that knowledge to the children in our programs. Must be able to thrive in an environment with the unique challenges of a non-profit community service organization. Works with limited supervision.
Essential Functions:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Maintain a controlled environment where participants follow the rules of the participating sport
- Models relationship-building skills in all interactions; develops and maintains collaborative relationships with staff, parents and caregivers, and community organizations (e.g., state child care licensing agency, school administration) to maximize program impact and drive overall outcomes; maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
- Ensure participants are active as possible during the program
- Oversees the Sports programs during practice times and games
- Inspect equipment to ensure safety of participants
- Arrive early to ensure fields/ courts are prepared and to welcome participants and their families
- Develops connections with parents, resulting in development of friendships and Y advocates and volunteers
- Keep first aid kit and whistle on hand at all times
- Encourage participants in social adjustments, desirable habits and attitudes, and individual achievements
- Keep area clean, neat and organized
- Attend YMCA provided training
- Report any maladjusted or criminal behavior that might damage individuals or the reputation of the YMCA to your supervisor including reporting any suspected child abuse
- Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
- High school diploma preferred.
- At least 16 years of age.
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications required within first 90 days
- Previous experience in Sports Supervision preferred
- Previous experience with team sports.
- Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
Physical Demands:
Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
