Project/Unit Description

The Test Engineering Division (TEN) in the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) develops Hardware in the Loop (HITL) test sets, test tools, analysis tools, and test methods for US Air Force, Army, and Navy sponsors. This research is critical for supporting development, debugging, analysis and testing of Electronic Warfare (EW) and Integrated EW (IEW) systems.

The Robins Test Software Branch (RTSB) of TEN provides software support in these research areas. A successful candidate will collaborate successfully with multi-domain teams to design, develop, and execute software engineering solutions for EW and avionics systems, and associated test systems. Software Engineers work with teams to develop requirements, perform software analysis and design, implement and maintain complex software solutions, and develop and execute tests.

Job Purpose

The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software applications and products. Additionally, the Software Engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, C, C , C#, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. In this role, the Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, Application Programming Interface (API) development, container development, and distributed systems. The Software Engineer also applies engineering principles to software creation, manages production releases of software, performs code reviews, merges feature development branches, and analyzes and triages issues. The necessary skill areas for the Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, software design and architecture development, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, software debugging and testing, and working on development teams. The Software Engineer also works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations
Additional Responsibilities
  • Develop novel, technical approaches to support the Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition life cycle
  • Work closely and effectively communicate with customers, subject matter experts, and project teams
  • Provide on-site support and troubleshooting of software and hardware systems
  • Work on and with physical hardware systems
  • Perform business development for software research, EW, and related activities
  • Perform task management
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with the software development lifecycle (This can be work experience, personal experience,
    or school projects or capstones)
  • Experience programming with at least one object-oriented or web software development language
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Ability to program in React, Typescript, Javascript, C#, C, or C
  • Experience with full stack web development
  • Experience with object-oriented development
  • Experience with agile/scrum methodology
  • Experience with continuous integration, pipelines, and other modern software best practices
  • Experience working on a software team
  • Experience maintaining and testing software codebases
  • Experience with versioning control systems such as Git
  • Experience programming unit or functional software test sets
  • Experience with EW and avionics systems
  • Willingness to perform international travel (only required for some positions
