Position Description
Summary of Duties:
Provides services to visitors of Hay House including admissions, tours, and museum shop sales. Reports to Operations Manager.
Responsibilities:
- Conducts tours for individual visitors and groups, interpreting the house, its collections, and 19th and 20th-century life based on provided training materials and updates;
- Sells tickets for general and group admission to Hay House;
- Answers the Hay House telephone, provides basic information to callers, directs callers to other staff as appropriate, and takes messages when necessary;
- Protects the collection while on duty;
- Assists with reservations and payments for special tours & events as needed;
- Assists with payment collections for scheduled school and group tours;
- Handles and monitors museum shop sales;
- Attends staff meetings and training opportunities;
- Assists in shop operations as requested;
- Assists in special projects as requested by Manager of Collections & Education
Qualifications:
- Position requires strong verbal communication skills, a pleasant manner, and the ability to work well with the public.
- Some prior experience with leading a group or teaching in a formal or informal setting is desirable.
- Must be cooperative, outgoing, engaging, enthusiastic and flexible.
- Must be able to work well under pressure, with the ability to handle large groups;
- Strong interest in history and eagerness to learn specific information required for tours.
- This position includes an extended length of time standing, walking and talking to visitors. The docent must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs.
- Must be able to handle money and work with a point of sales system.
- A high school diploma is required, two to four years college degree, or relevant coursework, preferred.
- Ability to work flexible hours to include weekends and holidays.
Starting Salary: $11.00/hour
Full Time/Part-Time: Part-time, up to 30 hours per week
Exempt/Nonexempt: Nonexempt
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: From $11.00 per hour
Expected hours: 5 – 20 per week
Schedule:
- Day shift
- Evenings as needed
- Weekends as needed
