General Maintenance Mechanic

Perform a wide range and variety of maintenance and repair operations necessary to keep plant property, equipment, machinery, and tools in good operating condition; diagnose problems and work in many varied and diversified capacities required in general maintenance, overhaul, and repair of plant equipment, processes and facilities. Requires a general knowledge of electronics and electrical systems to include basic electrical repairs as needed or directed. Plan and schedule plant and equipment maintenance activities to minimize disruption to plant production and material handling activities with some supervision and direction provided by the Plant Superintendent. Major mechanical repairs, installation, and/or electrical repairs may require outside vendors or assistance from a Master Maintenance Mechanic.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

• Work involves diversified duties, highly variable, requiring considerable care and judgment to effectively and efficiently diagnose, dismantle, repair, lubricate, reassemble, or otherwise perform general maintenance activities to include pipefitter, burner, welder, Fabricating millwright, assembler, carpenter, plumber, and installer skills and abilities. Work will include basic electrical repair and wiring.
• Implement and maintain the division’s preventive maintenance program with input from superintendent and manufacturer’s recommendations. Train and instruct employees on preventive maintenance activities and procedures. Inspect, adjust, clean, and/or lubricate equipment as normal part of preventive maintenance program.
• Maintain and control plant inventory levels for maintenance parts and supplies. Develop vendor relationships; negotiate favorable pricing for parts, supplies and services, order parts and supplies in accordance with supervisor approval.
• Train lesser-skilled maintenance positions on proper work methods and safety procedures when assisting with maintenance activities.
• Maintain plant equipment and maintenance records to meet Gerdau and OSHA’s safety and quality compliance standards.
• Diagnose causes of malfunctions by sight, sound, or actions of plant equipment, machinery or processes and determine corrective action to include seeking vendor assistance.
• Tear down, replace, repair, install, and assemble equipment, parts, components, and accessories. Develop and fabricate accessory fixtures or guards for machines and equipment. Adjust machine mechanisms such as feed, speed, power input or output.
• Direct and/or coordinate employees involved in maintenance repairs.

Additional Responsibilities

• On occasion, travel to attend maintenance-training programs or to provide assistance at other RF locations and to participate in cross-training activities.
• Repair portable power tools and perform other duties and work assignments as required and directed.
• Serve as resource to the safety council/committee.
  
  

Detect and report defective material, improper operation, and unusual conditions to proper supervision. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition. Follow prescribed safety regulations and practices.

EDUCATION

Requires working knowledge of machines, controls, hydraulics, pneumatics, and basic knowledge of electrical and electronic controls. Ability to read, write, and subtract and use shop mathematics. Know the use of a variety of maintenance and repair items. Equivalent to one to two years applied trades training.

Experience

Over 3 years’ experience in troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, welding, basic electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems.

Requires the use of considerable judgment and superintendent involvement to plan and perform preventive maintenance procedures and to maintain parts inventory. Requires some diagnostic ability and broad know-how with very heavy mechanical skill where only general methods are available.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Moderate physical effort consisting of each extreme from very light in observing and diagnosing to very heavy in difficult positions of repair and assembly.

MENTAL OR VISUAL DEMAND

Continuous mental and visual attention while making adjustments, repairs, and assembling; diversified operations requires constant alertness in detecting malfunctions and when performing basic electrical repairs.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR EQUIPMENT OR PROCESS

Responsible for a variety of hand tools and some specialized apparatus such as ohmmeters and test lights or other tools peculiar to particular trade. Probable damage over $235, but seldom over $2,350.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR MATERIAL OR PRODUCT

Material or product responsibility lies in proper repair and function of machines and equipment and not to aggravate malfunctions or indirectly contribute to present or future damage. Responsibility for working condition of many pieces of equipment. Loss seldom over $2,350.

Thoughtless performance of duties may cause lost-time injury to others through improper function of machinery, cranes, or other equipment.

Responsibility For Work Of Others

Responsible for own work and occasionally the work of one or two others who are assisting with maintenance repairs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent exposure to all conditions of plant facilities and work areas; exposure to several elements but usually not more than one at a time.

HAZARDS

Frequent occasions for climbing, working high up, working off ladders and exposure to electrical or operating machinery of various types. Injuries, should they occur, may result in partial incapacitation, due to loss of arm, leg, or eye. Possible severe electrical shock.
