Job Summary:
The Roller Operator on a Paving Crew is responsible for operating heavy machinery (specifically roller equipment) to compact asphalt, soil, or other materials during the construction or repair of roads, highways, and other paved surfaces. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the quality and smoothness of the paved surface. Union membership is required for this position.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Operate a variety of roller machines, including smooth drum and pneumatic rollers, to compact asphalt and other materials on paved surfaces.
Ensure the proper alignment, positioning, and speed of the roller equipment to achieve optimal compaction results.
Monitor the compaction process to avoid over-compaction or under-compaction, ensuring the paving meets industry standards.
Collaborate with the paving crew to ensure smooth and consistent transitions between sections of pavement.
Conduct pre-operation inspections of roller equipment, reporting any maintenance or safety concerns to the foreman or supervisor.
Maintain proper equipment operation, including ensuring the roller is clean, fueled, and ready for use.
Follow all safety protocols and regulations to ensure the safety of yourself and the team on the job site.
Communicate effectively with other team members to coordinate work and maintain workflow efficiency.
Other Required Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in the setup of the paving job site, including the placement of traffic control devices and other equipment.
Performs other duties as necessary or as assigned.
Immediately report any safety hazards, accidents, or mechanical issues to the appropriate personnel.
Prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
The position will require work outside of normal business hours.
Ability to work long hours in challenging physical conditions.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Skills/Abilities:
Ability to adapt to changing tasks and responsibilities based on project needs.
Basic knowledge of construction tools and equipment is required.
Represent The Gerken Companies to customers in a professional manner, supporting the company’s goals.
Ability to work as part of a team and take direction from supervisors while ensuring efficient workflow.
Education and Experience:
Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school is required.
